Yup, I'm just gonna echo what's been said already: g&l tribute series or squier cv series. I know a handful of other brands that make an equally good tele or strat for the money, but they're chinese and not exactly well known or popular, which won't help your resale value.
Not a huge fan of the vintage modified series or the mascis signature. Nothing to do with the overal quality or value for money or anything, I think I'm just a bit of a purist when it comes to fenders...

My Jay Turser MG-2 mustang copy cost me >$200 new and it's first guitar I reach for when I want to jam. Honorable mentions are 70's Japanese pseudo-Fenders and the good old Jagmaster!
