Tell me about the Jet city pico valve.

Post by misterstomach »

I've been looking for a good practice amp. Found one of these locally for $150. Seems like a good deal. Anyone have experience? With all the different power tube options it seems like one could find some good tones. I just want a decent amp for home practice and songwriting. Will probably use pedals for dirt. Just trying to figure out if I should jump on this.

I have one, like it. Sounds good to me. Records well and has a shitton of sounds with The powertube option. You can't go wrong imho.

Change v2 to a 12at7 to correct for a manufacturing error, or just mod it. I think it's the ampgarage.com forum that has a thread on the issue and the circuit fix. Some like the song with the error just fine, some most assuredly do not. I have no idea which camp I'm in.

I'll have to try the preamp tube change and see how it goes.

It's nice having a 2w mode and a 5w mode. I run my pedalboard through it and it's a pretty good platform at home. It sounds pretty awesome when cranked. Could keep up with a quiet-ish drummer. Boosted with a Demon King and a Pharaoh the fucker roared. Lots of feedback but that's music to my ears.

For your purposes I think that it'll do exactly what you want it to -- just like a lot of similarly styled amps would. Valve Jr. would be fine, too. The reason I sold my Kustom Defender 5H was because it didn't have the EQ-shaping that I desired. At least with the PicoValve I have Treble, Middle and Bass alongside Preamp and Master Volume. Also has a bright switch -- which I don't use because both of my Fenders seem bright enough as is.

Lastly, for what it's worth, Musicians Friend blew these out at like $99 a pop. That's when I picked mine up. $150 is a lot cheaper than what they go for new but seller could have purchased this for significantly less.
