Accidentally ran AC into DC pedal

Post by zeravla »

So I'm a moron and wasn't paying attention and ran a 9v AC power supply into a pedal that needs a DC supply.
I immediately started smelling a burning electrical smell and unplugged everything to investigate. Opened up the pedal and there's a small burn spot on the board where the power jack is connected and some serious stank.
Funny part is when I plug the pedal in with the correct supply it still works fine. I'm wondering should I be worried about anything or does the fact that it's working mean I narrowly escaped frying it and it should be fine now?

I hope you're open-minded because your pedal is now bisexual.

Most pedals have a diode in them that protects the circuit from getting fried just in case you plug in the wrong power adapter.

But if it still works then the diode didn't blow either? Maybe because it's the same voltage it wasn't so bad :D

looks like the diode did indeed burst - were there any little particles in there? looks like a dr scientist pedal, perhaps? if so, email ryan.
you may run down the lifespan of the pedal of course but if it works for now then all is good... for now. caps may degrade faster, things may fail in the future but it really all depends on how long it was hit for and what protection was in there.

Thanks, guys! Feeling a little better about my idiocy.

It's an EQD Disaster Transport. I didn't see any particles, just the burn spot. I tried to disassemble it and see what the other side of the board looked like but it's jammed in there pretty good and I'm scared to break something prying it out. I'm ok with an iron so if it's something I can replace I may give it a shot if I can get it apart sometime.
