Yamaha Magicstomp. (Softfocus Quest!)
Hi there, I found a black magicstomp for cheap in my city, can you please tell me the difference between the black, the purple and the acoustic version? I read somewhere that they differ only in factory presets (and obviously the color too).
Thank you!
Thank you!

Re: Yamaha Magicstomp versions.
I think you can load any version of the firmware onto any version of the hardware.

Re: Yamaha Magicstomp versions.
The black is the bass version, the gold the acoustic, and the purple is the electric. Electric comes in mk i and mk II versions. Mk I is the only one without the headphone jack but can be flashed to the mk II firmware. Any of the mk II, bass, or acoustic can be flashed to each other or can be loaded with a mix of patches from all versions.
So get what's cheap, with a headphone jack if that matters to you. For me it was the acoustic version, which IMO looks best.

No on the soft focus patch. I've tried to nail that sound with mine a few times and it hasn't come out right yet. It does have the Symphonic effect, which is usually the missing key to the soft focus patch (I think its something like Reverb>Symphonic>Delay, but I can't recall for sure), but you have to program it yourself. Maybe someone has a patch they've made floating around the internet, but I haven't seen it.

Re: Yamaha Magicstomp versions.
Lucky for you I still have my FX500 manual.
Soft focus=
Compressor Thr. ~40db, RAT 1/2, ATK 1.1ms, LVL +15DB
>EQ, but that's like whatever
>Delay 300ms, 72% feedback
>Verb 3.4s 100%wet
>Symphonic.
I made a close approximation on my M13. The compressor is the important part.

I'll try simulate that with my Magicstomp later, what type of reverb do you think would be most effective?futuresailors wrote:Lucky for you I still have my FX500 manual.

Re: Yamaha Magicstomp versions.
Thank you for your advices! But, what's "symphonic" exactly?
Mmmm... I'll try to do the same effect with my zoom g5, if I fail, I will buy the cdr70!
I read somewhere that the zoom cdr70 has a patch really similar to the soft focus, @futuresailors have you used the particle on the M13?

I think it's a type of chorusing effect.

Re: Yamaha Magicstomp. (Softfocus Quest!)
Yeah, I think it's sort of like a dimension chorus deal. "A broad sweeping effect". There's a subtle difference between it and a normal chorus.
@dramatis yeah, that thing's fun! might even have used it for my soft focus attempt because the compressors on the m13 don't get extreme enough. I can look at what patches I used tomorrow.

Re: Yamaha Magicstomp versions.
Yeah, I think the Zoom MS-70CDR is the same deal where you have to program it yourself, at least from what I have read. But I would be interested to know if anyone has other info, since I plan on getting a 70cdr soon.Dramatis Persona wrote:Thank you for your advices! But, what's "symphonic" exactly?

I think I will try to program my Magicstomp for soft focus again this weekend based on the specs posted above (I've used similar specs I've found before, but I don't think I've tried it with a compressor effect mixed in). Will let you guys know if it works.
