Gonna build me a Muff and when checking out kits I noticed the 'Violet Big Muff', I knew about the Triangle, Sovtek and Ram's Head etc. but what's up with the Violet version? Is it just a more aggressive Ram's Head? I have an old OP-AMP Big Muff but I want something a little less full on wall of fuzz but also not something super smooth like the Russian Muffs.
I think J used a Deluxe Big Muff but I'm digging this sound.

I've built up the Violet before, never done a traditional Rams Head to be able to compare. But I like the sound of the Violet. Super sustainy, nice amount of mids, cuts through a little more

Yeah, I thought Violet Muffs were generally regarded as being clear and sustainy sounding. Maybe a little less low end than a regular Ram's Head.
Here's Wren and Cuff's Big Muff comparison chart (which sort of extends to Muffs in general):

Yeah just read through the KitRae site and more clarity on chords with more mids/less boomy low end seems to be what makes it different.skullservant wrote:I've built up the Violet before, never done a traditional Rams Head to be able to compare. Sounds perfect so I'll give it a go :D

By that point the Deluxe Big Muff got stolen and he switched to a Rams Head (Kitrae says that the circuit trace he saw from Tym is most like a V6).woolyh wrote: I think J used a Deluxe Big Muff but I'm digging this sound.

VRH is my fav out of all the versions...but im not chasing any specific "iconic tones" either...woolyh wrote:Yeah just read through the KitRae site and more clarity on chords with more mids/less boomy low end seems to be what makes it different.skullservant wrote:I've built up the Violet before, never done a traditional Rams Head to be able to compare. I've only used a clone of it, but it is definitely my favorite version of the muff. The one thing that stands out most about it to me is that you can play chords with it and not have them get all muddy/unrecognizable like a regular big muff. Killer sustain as well.
