I'm getting ready to build some bookshelves for my wife. I'm excited for the project, cause that means I get to buy a circular saw.

or a makita sidewinder if thats too much
although for bookshelves
you may be better off with a miter saw
i usually use 1x10 for bookcases
thats 9 1/2" wide
you shouldnd have to cut lengthwise (rip)
it should just be the square cuts the width and height
if this is your first saw, those cuts maybe a bitch
get a speed square and a cheap miter saw
thatll make it so much easier

While I adore a good miter saw, I simply don't have enough long term usage for it. I figure that with a little bit of care, a circular saw should take care of everything. I'm thinking of doing an open style bookshelf, so I really don't have to make any long cuts. And definitely no ripping. I wouldn't even try that without a table saw.

Haha, no worries, I was going to ask your advice on tools anyway! I definitely didn't get a weird vibe.

I'll check that Makita out. My dad has always been a Dewalt guy, but I'm a little more open minded.
