Madvilliany

Post by Bellyheart »

Came out ten years ago this week. What the fluegelhorn?

That album is top five for me and changed how I felt about the direction of hip hop. At the time commercial rap was Dip Set, crunk, G-unit, and a bunch of songs ripping off the song that just came out months prior.

Stones throw and Doom and Madlib held it down.

The album is loaded with quotables and memorable sounds. Rarely will you find someone who likes hiphop and doesn't vibe with this record. It's the kind of record that even appeals to people who aren't into hiphop.
My high points: Accordion, Meat Grinder, Curls, ALL CAPS, Great Day, Rhinestone Cowboy

Definitive must-have on vinyl AFAIC. As are the other titles from Doom's most prolific 30 months of his career:
The Vaudeville Villain
Mm.. Food
The Mouse And The Mask

Some of the most entertaining stuff I've heard put to tape/disk/whatever. It's ridiculous and surreal. And funny to fans of silliness. Words fail me in describing all the layers of excellence in these records. Everyone should see for themselves.

Madvillainy is great! the remix version was good too, i had always intended on making a playlist with my favorite versions of each track to see how it would sound.

Jesus, ten years? It still sounds fresh and new in comparison to a lot of stuff.

+1

People should check out Black Up by Shabazz Palaces. Best hip hop record since Madvilliany dropped

This is the 20th anniversary for what was arguably the best hiphop year of the 90s, especially for stuff coming out of NYC.
The fall of '93 saw the release of Midnight Marauders, Enter The Wu-Tang & Enta Da Stage...and out west Doggystyle was the most anticipated debut of all time, in its day...and after those 4 records released within weeks of each other, it seemed like for a while that instant-classics were the new norm. The revival of boom-bap and the rise of jazzy hiphop. Remember how fresh it all seemed, in spite of being formulaic? Those nostalgia feels really get me.

Damn, that was a good year in hip hop certainly. Also arguably the best year in movies as well. 93...

The Cold Vein is another outstanding record. Nothing else sounded like it in its day...and not much has since.
But it is challenging to the listener (unlike Madvillainy which is pretty much infectious from the start); and requires several listens to unfold and make sense. It's one of those projects that keeps getting better with each listen.

Iron Galaxy is a perfect opening track...it really sets the stage for a good album.
Ox Out The Cage, A B-Boy's Alpha, The F-Word, Painkillers are also highlights on a album made for late night/chilly rainy day listening.

The Cold Vein is amazing. El-P really crafted a sound for those two. Vast Aire has never really lived up to the potential displayed on this album.

I know! Such a bummer.

As for Madvillainy being way more accessible; no arguments here. That album's dynamite. Sun Ra samples!
