Bass Cab Recommendations

Post by bronzetalon »

Looks like I might be getting a hovercraft now what cabs should I be looking for? I've been told here in the past that 4x12 would be sweet what can you recommend me?

Old Post:
I've been pretty happy with my current setup but have really been thinking about running a Meat Smoke or a Mother. My question to you guys is are there any other builders out there that do a 200w to 300w tube amp that I should be looking for? I'm currently leaning towards the Science but I'm not sure yet.

Hovercraft?

I'll never have the need, but I've wanted to try/own/molest those new (aka not vintage) Traynor bass heads since their release.

I mean, none of these are new, but

-Sunn 2000s
-SVT
-Traynor YBA-3 (not quite 200w, but you'd be hard pressed to find the difference volume wise)

Or you could go FULL KVLT and get a VB-2.

When you can't do a fridge...

15s all day.

They're pretty overpriced but the Orange OBC115 is the best sounding 15 I've ever heard

The orange cabs i'm talking about reproduce the full frequency spectrum quite well, especially compared to most 15s which seem to be designed to piggyback. I don't know shit about cab design but I don't like the frequency response from the speaker in the avatar just from looking at specs on the Eminence website, so of course take that with a grain of salt.

As for the 2x12, say no to tweeters

Fuzz and Dirt + Tweeters = Bees in a can

It's fine if you can turn the tweeter off, but I'm not sure you can with those avatar cabs

As a update I'm going to go with a science amps 2x15 which is based on the kappa 15" ported design. So it will be like a pair of Orange odc115s. Now I just need to decide if I want to go rusty box into power amp or spend the dough on the science amp mother 200w monster.

You used to be able to disable the tweeters on the avatars, but it's been 10+ yrs since I've owned one.
