I've been going on a lot lately about the Peavey 120/120, but seriously consider going the separate pre/power route, Peavey shit is very affordable on the second hand market.

Ampeg VH140C or SS140C.
(Can't remember if it's one, the other, or both, but)
Lots of people really dig the high gain on these.
They can be had for pretty cheap, far less than $600.

Second'd. Also, if you're lucky, you can find Mesa Stilletto Aces for around that price. Only 50w, but they're Mesa's take on Marshalls, and for some reason that wasn't popular? It's tight. The Crunch option (which both channels feature) is a way outrageous JCM 800 sound.PetZounds wrote:Ampeg VH140C or SS140C.

Otherwise, 5150 heads can be found for cheap sometimes, or you could luck out like a kid I knew in high school that bought a Triple Rec and a teisco bass for $300 from some guy.

Re: Gainy amps?
Every time I've played a Mesa I've always been kinda underwhelmed. Maybe the guitar want right for it.
Pretty blown away by those ampegs. I'm thinkin soli star might be a good idea. I'm going for a pretty harsh black metal tone with all dem razor sharp highs and what not.
If jcm 900s weren't priced the way they are I might go for one of those too.

Dude, the 5150 is super razor sharp in the treble. I think that's why it doesn't get along with my fuzz which is tuned for a darker rig. The newer peavey version is just as good as the older versions.

I have a Laney GH50L and agree 100%. This and a Pharoah in diodes-out setting will kill. I have a VH140-C and the Laney has more-better gain. The Ampeg rules but the GH50L is my favorite amp.AngryGoldfish wrote:...SNIP...
For a 'knarly' sound, Laney GH100L. Also, the GH100L might need a boost to really get cooking. The rest have enough gain for most genres.

Used 6505+ combo. the base distortion will have you in Deafheaven territory, horrible distortion will bring to other BM territory.

Re: Gainy amps?
There's plenty of good options listed in this thread, but let me say that I love my 5150. It can bring as much heavy as you want and then some. I may acquire more amps, but I'll never let my 5150 go.
