fOXX Power Machine

Post by friendship »

Does anyone know anything about these? Never seen these before, can't seem to find any info. It looks like it contains a very small amount of parts. I wonder what it is exactly/how it sounds. I'm imagining it cloned into a pedal with a stomp switch for that overdrive switch.

I don't know anything about it but looking at the gut shot there, I count 4 resistors, one transistor and 2 caps so it's probably very much similar to an EHX LPB-1 (standard transistor boost topology) although those are electrolytic caps so probably with greatly increased cap values to boost lower frequencies.

Nothing very exciting but could sound decent.

Yea, like Scruffie said, it seems to be a standard boost with increased caps. The "overdrive" simply adds a single GE diode to ground at the output. Transistor looks like maybe a 2n3565, which they have used in other circuits, so makes sense.

I could mess with it on the breadboard and let you know? It's pretty much an Electra.

Yeah if you feel like messing around with it. It's probably nothing extraordinary, I'm just always on the lookout for simple dirt pedals with unique textures.

You guys are right so far,
on "Boost" mode it sounds very similar to an LPB-1 with WAY more low end available.
but with the "Overdrive" mode clicked on, it gets a cool fuzzy overdrive sound (which is pretty amazing on bass!)
I hate to use the term, but it is very "amp-like", and on bass it makes you sound like Lemmy.

I have found that running other fuzzes into it is where the magic happens though.
shit get's super saturated and loud!

Makes you sound like Lemmy on bass, you say? I'M IN!!!!!!!

Seriously, if anyone finds one for cheap or clones one (cough, cough, Jero), drop me a line. I'm always looking for a good fuzzy bass overdrive. Or fuzz. Fuzzy bass fuzz.
I'm more like a mids-ist than a bassist.

Isn't that Foxx Select-A-Fuzz a hen's tooth among hens' teeth, just exceedingly rare? Man, would love to see good gut shots.

Fuck and the Clean Machine too while we're at it. http://reverb.com/item/5176-foxx-clean- ... -wave-fuzz

Maybe there's a reason why the Tone Machine is the only Foxx pedal people talk about, but I'd still like to play these

Played around with the Power & Clean Machines, using correct values for the Clean and assumed cap values for the Power.
The PM is a mostly clean boost with some low end. Makes for a nice old school bass overdrive sound with the diode in. Doesn't sound as good on guitar.

For the Clean Machine, the "Normal" mode is essentially a passive lpf + vol. As you rotate through the each mode, it cascades an identical gain stage. "Sustain" mode gives a dark boost. "More Sustain" adds volume and grit. Nice and crackly/tattered, warm overdrive, that cleans up pretty well. Almost gated, but not in a compressed/synthy way "Dirty" mode turns into a slightly compressed, blown out, sputtery broken fuzz, with increased sustain over the previous mode.
On bass, the dirtier modes are neat, but not something most could use all the time.

I'm gonna put one of these together, with both Power and Clean Machine (on individual stomps). The CM will be first so you can ram the Boost with it. (As edkoppel said, "running other fuzzes into it is where the magic happens.") You got dibs.

I sent him a message offering a free build for good gut shots of the Select and Power, or at least to confirm the values. Got no response :(

Try PMing edkoppel over on the D*A*M forum. He posts there more often than he posts here.
