Looking for a new chorus or phaser

Post by scienceman »

I already have a small clone but I only use it with the depth switch in the up position and the rate maxed for raygun sounds. All of the other setting sound too '80 to me. So what I'm looking for is a chorus or phaser that can do the raygun noises and sounds cool in other positions. More knobs are a plus as well.

I have an Ibanez CF7 that does drunk space ships as well as subtle shit. You might still consider it really 80s, since it's a chorus, but there's also the flanger portion of the circuit, so. They go for cheap. Downsides include clock noise and flimsy switch.

I'm thinking like 150 new or used. Would a phaser be a better bet?

Maybe. Do you prefer ketchup or mayonnaise on your fries?

With $150 you can get a cf7, a pm7, and a cheap tb loop and still have cash left over.

I don't have any personal experience of any of the Ibanez 'tonelok' modulation pedals, but a couple them sound interesting.

None may do wild enough, but for chorus and phasers I'd recommend:

Visual Sound Liquid Chorus (analogue. 4 knobs. can do the leslie type thing)

Pearl Chorus [vintage - 1980s] (analogue)

Aria CH5 Chorus (metal cased one) [vintage - 1980s] (darker sounding analogue)

Voodoo Lab Analog Chorus (has phaser like qualities) [discontinued]

Visual Sound Oil Can phaser (analogue. the best sounding phaser out there for under £100 imo)

Akai Intelliphase [discontinued] (analogue. unusual sensitivity option)

p.s. Oh, what about an EHX Flanger Hoax?

EQD Sea Machine is a magical box full of crazy. I haven't gotten laser sounds out of it yet (though I haven't tried), but I've gotten all sorts of whacked out back & forth detuned swinging insanity. I can't emphasize enough how wonderfully nutty that thing can be.
