Possibly done for but asking anyways...

Post by Dronefacemcgee »

Got this NYC Big Muff for free since it doesn't work properly.

I was told some mods were done to it but had since been removed so someone has been poking around in there as if I couldn't already tell.
It powers on and passes sound when bypassed, but when on it makes no sound. I used to able to get it to work by giving it the ole whack but no it refuses to do anything.

I'm guessing it's dunzo due to the burnt areas on the board, but what do I know (absolutely nothing that's what) So I'm seeing if anyone here can give me an opinion.

If it used to start working when you'd bump/whack it, then I'd say you have a bad solder joint, or wire.

The burnt areas just look like they've been overheated during mods. Like Jero says, if moving it made it work then it's a bad joint that's gone chronic and it's probably an easy fix with an iron and a circuit tester.

It could be pretty much anything. If you can't read a schematic, that'd be the place to start. Then make an audio probe and find where the audio stops. Then you isolate why. Then you fix it. Or since you don't have anything in the pedal, you could always sell it for cheap. :) I've been wanting one of those big enclosures to put a couple of my own big muffs in...
