How is Eathquake Devices Depths Vibe?

Post by OakenTower »

Any of you guys use Vibe pedals? Im fiending for a nice authentic vibe. I think heavy fuzzed out riffs with a lush vibe will be inspiring. Earthquaker Devices Depths Vibe looks very appealing but there isnt a lot of information I can find from users. Any users or fans of this pedal? I realize its relatively newly released.

I'm interested to know too about the EQD Depths.

The Voodoo Lab Micro Vibe seems to be one of the more affordable higher end univibe type pedals. Oh, and the BBE Vibe.

Cheaper options are the Moen Shakey Jimi and the Danelectro Vibe. Both sound very good. I recommend the Danelectro for anyone looking to get into the univibe thing, but is on a budget or wants to test the water.

All of the above have the genuine photocell/bulb thing going on.

If you're content with a phaser for the univibe thing, check out the Visual Sound Oil Can. Great sound and amazing value! I would favour it over an MXR Phase 90 or a modern EHX Small Stone any day.

I tried The Depths but I didn't think it was deep enough, it's a bit of a subtle pedal really and I didn't like the wave / LFO that much either as it's a bit jumpy, there's a lot of controls but what they do I found to be quite subtle and I couldn't get what I wanted out of it.
The Black Cat Vibe and MG Vibe I tried next to it were just heaps better in my opinion, much deeper, much more compelling.
That said I usually use vibe on clean sounds and I like a really deep throb in my vibe (ouch, what did I say there)…

I'm interested in how the new MXR Univibe sounds. Why don't more vibe pedals have expression outs?

Another great option is the CultureJam DuoVibe, its both a phaser and a vibe in one box with square and triangle wave options. It doesn't go super slow but its definitely got some great depth to it and sounds amazing on cleans. Plus its relatively inexpensive in comparison to alot of other univibe clones out there.

I ordered one on an impulse and year long obsession with vibes. For the price and features, plus the excellent lineage(eqd)and sweet graphics I'm hoping it will serve me well. Where do you run a vibe in the pedal order? In the effects loop?

Univibe type effects, like phasers, can be very flexible where they go in the signal chain. Pre-dirt. Post-dirt. Sandwiched between dirt. I would say the orthodoxy is time-based modulation like chorus and flanger in the amp's effects loop (if you have one), but univibe-types and phasers before the amp - even before or between dirt. One just needs to experiment about the pre- or post-dirt pedal thing and see what works best for you for your gear and taste. Placement of phasers and univibe-type pedals is a very personal thing indeed - more so than most pedal types (although of course there are no 'rules').

I think of modulation pre/post dirt kind of like the X-Men. Do you want your thick metal coat to be on top of everything, like Colossus? Or do you want your interior to be bolstered by a thick adamantium skeleton underneath your fleshy surface?

I forget where I was going with this.

I'm really interested in the Micro Vibe right now. I just wanna know how it plays with lots of dirt/fuzz.

Hey, Skip I looked into this one, but couldn't find a lot of clear literature on it. It looked to be photocell, but is it just a photocell phaser with the stages messed with a bit.
The ability to switch between both is mighty appealing if the vibe is done right...

That was awesome.

Edit: just listening to a demo of the Black Cat Vibe now. It's pretty swank. $300US though....

It is photocell from what I understand but that's about the extent of my knowledge on it. If you PM CultureJam he can fill you in on all the deetz.

the vibe id one right :thumb: and so is the phaser IMO, and I'm picky about Phasers. It also sounds amazeballs on bass, which is actually what I'm using it on right now, its just got this perfect subtle throb which makes you feel like your recovering from getting punched in the head

I really like the Depths. I do agree that the LFO take a little getting used to. The throb and voice knobs are the key to finding a sound you'll like.

I'm wondering if it's essentially the same as the Hendrix Univibe that came out a little while back. I had that for a couple months and thought it sounded quite good for the price. Now they sell for over $200 (which is why I sold it-- got a Depths plus about 60 bucks...). I think it might actually be worth a look.

I reckon it probably is the same thing without the paint job. Flipping 4 Profit aside, how do you feel it compared to the depths?
