Holy fucking Kayo Dot
Went to see them tonight at the local DIY hole-in-the-wall space, and holy fuck did they play an intense set. Like, "heavier and more intense than all the noise and doom bands that opened for them" kind of intense. Their latest material is fucking great. Also I had no idea that Toby Driver could do spot-on black metal style vocals.

Re: Holy fucking Kayo Dot
Kayo Dot is one of my all time favorite bands, they're fucking amazing in everyway. Musicianship, songwriting, vocals, drums EVERYTHING IS AMAZING. I feel like there's nothing Kayo Dot wouldn't do to make the best music possible. Toby Driver can do like any kind of vocals extremely well. His highs are soooo amazing and nasty. I saw them play in town monday, before that I drove to New Orleans (about 600 miles away?) to see them. We ended up getting there just as they played the last two minutes of their set so we saw them play the next day three hours north. that made the drive home a little under 900 miles haha. WORTH IT.
Glad you enjoyed the show! Wish everyone could experience how Kayo Dot's music makes me feel.
Listen to Toby's climatic scream @ 8:10 HOLY FUCK. I suggest building up to it for effect.

I've always thought that it feels like some of the "dreamiest" music. Not necessarily in a "ohh, pretty" sort of way, but in that surreal, abstract sort of way. I really like their album Choirs of the Eye.
Also, I don't play bass, but I loved that his bass has the extra frets for the quarter-tones.

Toby's bass is crazy, I don't really understand how all the frets work but he makes it work. I wonder if he ever uses the extra notes when he plays live. I have a lot of respect for his bass playing. The amount of notes he uses and their lengths is really mature and creative. it really fits in with the rest of the ensemble which kind of every instrument does because his compositions are so well put together. It's really all about the big picture with Kayo Dot's music, everything is intertwined blah blah blah.
And yeah I definitely feel the dreamyness. I think a lot of the awesome production their albums really help with that. Gamma Knife's "Lethe" and "Gamma Knife" are some of the most beautiful and dreamy songs ever.

Kayo Dot is one of my favourite bands of all time. Toby Driver's compositions just blow my mind. I remember there being an old thread somewhere on the internet of him wanting to put together a little book for the sheet music of Choirs of the Eye. Would love to own that.

I would start with Choirs Of The Eye. Not only are all their albums different, but there's great contrasts between the songs themselves.

Yeah, Choirs is a good starting point. Some of their stuff is weird, barely-structured jazz (kind of) and sometimes it strays right into noise and black-metalish sounds. HUGE spectrum of sound and style.ChetMagongalo wrote:I would start with Choirs Of The Eye. Not only are all their albums different, but there's great contrasts between the songs themselves.

Re: Holy fucking Kayo Dot
I didn't get any pics, but off the top of my head I spotted:
a DL4
OCD
Rat
some MXR stuff (I think)
a dispatch master (I think)
an ipad synth (for one song)
To answer ChetM's thoughts about Toby's bass: I'm not sure that it was fretted that way primarily for when he started playing with the Secret Chiefs 3, but those extra frets add the quarter-tones needed to play arabic-esque music.

Yeah bros, Kayo Dot's new stuff is bloody awesome. love every second of it...
I also saw them a month or two ago. Their drummer is the best thing to watch... a real pro.
Holy fucking Kayo Dot, I concur

This thread reminded me that I hadn't listened to Part the Second in a while.

Re: Holy fucking Kayo Dot
Their saxophonist had a boss pitch shifter, OC3 and one other boss pedal, I think it was a DD? Him and Toby also had small mixers at their feet, but for what I'm not sure.
Toby ran a newer EHX Polyphase, and left it on for a lot of the time. Pretty sure Toby was running a two amp setup with a SS ampeg and a small Musicman combo. There were 4 amps on stage so someone was doubling somewhere. Toby had two MXR dirt pedals I think? He ran his vocals thru an EQD Dispatch Master. There were some other pedals but I don't remember them.
The other guitarist had a DL4 and a few other pedals. At least one was def a light OD or boost
