NAD: sound city hiwatt conversion head.

Post by GAS KING »

.....and I don't like it.

Picked it up on a whim, without playing it (online).

Really it's not bad, just not what I was expecting.
Seems like I take a chance on a weird amp every couple years.

It's painfully bright unless I turn down the presence, treble and mids nearly all the way when the channels are internally jumpered.
Each channel used separately sounds less extreme.

It's probably the loudest amp I've ever had though. Good crap it's loud.

I think it's supposed to be a OL model.
It's got a master, gain and dual channel volume controls.

Never played a real Hiwatt......so I have no basis for comparison.

Looks very nice but description sounds too bright for my tastes. Needs dark fuzz. :thumb:

It thickens up well, and more so as you crank it.
It always has a lot of cut and punch. So much it has to be dialed back.

I wish I knew if it was similar to a hiwatt or not....

Might have to open it up and see if I can compare it to some hiwatt scematics.

The only Hiwatt I've played was a 100 watter and it was insanely bright. Def thickened up but not until you hit noise complaint volume levels. Loved pedals tho. I've wanted to try a 50W ever since.

Never had a chance to play a Sound City sadly.

Thanks for the link MEC......I did some research prior and after purchasing the amp there.
....you're right though......that does seem like the most informed place and least uppity.

-------------------------------------------------

It's weird, I couldn't image that bright of a tone working for anything.

lol

I was using a semi-hollow with dual HBs.
I'll give my Jazzmaster as shot tomorrow, but after this test.............I blame/thank you for not being able to hear falsetto male pop voices, and most of mariah carey's discography.

Yep. Guy hangs there and at ampgarage.com with the handle gldtp99 or something like. Big on Sound City conversions, Orange, and Hiwatt. Good practical tech and he has built for a range of players. Good, helpful info source. Also, Mark Huss's Hiwatt.org is a good resource.

Yup, responding to gldtp99 right now on the forum that shall not be named.

I'm thinking someone did this conversion, and messed something up.

I have a utilitarian ability, when it comes to understanding electronics.......meaning, I could probably figure out what's wrong via schematic, clean up the wiring, and such.....I'm just no good with actual electronics theory, and trouble shooting a broken amp.
