the first song i heard by deafheaven i was into. i thought they were great. it's been all downhill from there. not really into them or their whole thing.

in other news, i'm working on a very sweet new acquisition. hoping to close the deal in the next week. i'll post an update if it works out.

I have much to comment on...

I may be in the minority here, but I think Deafheaven is great. The assessment that they're more along the Envy/City of Caterpillar line sort of nails it on the head. They're like a 'blackened' influenced Envy. I hesitate to lump them into any sort of North American Black Metal type scene because they don't really fit the bit. There's a lot of elitism surrounding that type of thing. I think Skully, while maybe not being into Deafheaven, can probably understand what I mean in that. The whole throwing a label at a band because of a few things and then having it stick can work positively and negatively. Deafheaven does lots of cool shit with fast parts and delay. I like those

I wouldn't even think to lump them in as black metal. Just drawing the correlation for sake of his vocal style.

Nice man, they can do heavy for sure. Pro tip, Stand in front of Dana's amp for max chest crushing holy shit factor. There should be a slave of the guitar rig right next to it so you hear everything. (except maybe the vocs which are good) WARNING this is definitely a hearing damage zone but it's awesome.

They're one of the best sounding bands I've heard. Their mix is solid as hell. Plus every bassist playing a Meatsmoke I have seen has the best bass tone I've heard.

My band played with them in 2011 before they got signed and they were pretty nice guys then and the music on their demo was cool but afterwards they got this ego and started watering that black metal shit down. Heres a fun fact. The old drummer Trevor is the drummer/vocalist of Lycus.

All the dudes in Deafheaven have been super nice to me. I sold their old bass player my old Sound City 120 when he was still in the band. That was years ago and their guitarists and singer recognized me recently from that time. I've never considered them black metal, they kinda have their own thing going on, with Sunbather being much more ambient. I actually think Sunbather is fantastic from beginning to end. Live show is cheesy, but they're on a good wave so might as well ride it. Kids dig it up, so why stop, even if it's cheesy for the few of us that kinda giggle at it.

I definitely don't think they're black metal. They just borrow some things from the genre. Blackened is more appropriate, but hardly fully appropriate. Simply appropriated.

Very true! I want one pretty bad. Just thunderous. I'd be after that falcon, but I think the Meat would be an ample amount of overkill as is.

I can certainly understand not liking Sunbather. I really really enjoy it, and thought they sounded very good live. That said, the lead singer's shtick was pretty eye roll inducing to me. His whipping from trancelike orchestra conducting to SCARY MAN CRAZY EYES felt painfully rehearsed and awkward in general. Rest of the band seemed to be having fun that night though.

I'm so excited to get in our space and go tone seeking. Got a bunch of new gear to play with. This is gonna be great. Not to mention got a new guitarist and auditioning another tomorrow. Finding new people is such a crap shoot. The worst are the ones that read my very specific Craigslist ad and then contact me saying things like "Doom. Yeah, yeah. I can dig it. But what do you think about thrash? And grunge?" I've gotten a couple of those responses. No thanks. But Exciting things brewing.

I feel your pain on the cl musician search. We went through the same people with the same responses. The worst was when they say they are into it but are totally confused as to why you don't want to do iron maiden covers or something else equally overdone.

So I'm going to be spending a couple hours tomorrow fiddling knobs on all the pedals I just got . (After mailing out the demon king chiller ) I just wanted to check with your collective minds and experience considering these are pretty common. Really just to hone in on a sweet spot and I can expand from there. So I have a bluebeard, Pharaoh, turbo rat, and I have a black forest and revelation superbass heading this direction. Also have a small stone but I've found that works best in front of my dirt because it calms the volume swell & lull it gives off. Ok well
