My favourite pairing: a vintage-style fuzz, with a choppy tremolo.

In terms of a pairing of two dirt pedals... um.. too many choices. For purely versatility purposes, a versatile drive pedal (say, EQD Crimson Drive, or Coopersonic tube overdrive, or an Akai G-Drive, or Visual Sound Jekyll & Hyde, or T-Rex Mudhoney), paired with a versatile fuzz (say, a Way Huge Swollen Pickle mkII, or a MI Audio G.I. Fuzz).
