Anyone use(d) a sub pedal? such as DOD Meatbox?

Post by ChetMagongalo »

What do you guys think of pedals like the meatbox? I have a fuzz I mostly use because it has a stupid amount of low end but sometimes I wish I could just have the low end it provides and then run it with other fuzzes I have. I know Mantic makes their Density pedals and they seem pretty cool, anyone tried those?

I had a Mantic Conceptual Density Hulk for several months. I'm a tabletop/synths only guy though.

It rocked from the front to back and eventually killed my headphones, but I'd probably get another someday if I had more pedal space.

You could consider an EHX Mole, they are cheap and available.

I had a Meatbox for about a year, about 3 years ago. I loved it for recording and playing live, but it blew my 1x15 I was using at the time

I've had several Meatboxes over the year and got to use a Density Hulk as well. The Hulk's freq controls (35 and 60hz I think?) didn't seem as smooth as the OG Meatbox but they both will push so much low end out it's ridiculous. It can be both tastefully and irresponsibly used depending on your setup of course. Fatten things up they WILL do.

Running a limiter at the end of your chain will help prevent blowing up speakers. I have the hulk and it is stupid how much low end it pumps. Like that gut grabbing brown note kind of lows.

The Meatbox and Density Hulk aren't octavers so they also work on chords, right?
If you don't necessarily need to play chords than I'd suggest getting an Aguilar Octamizer and put it after all your drives and fuzzes.

Both add a sub harmonic tone to the signal, and both have 60 and 30hz boosts. No traditional octaving.

I was using mine after a Malekko 616 for super warm synth sounds that probably contained tons of useless frequencies, but the muddy sound it created was pretty fun and distinct.

Never used a true sub pedal (though I'm hoping to change that), but I routinely use a Boss OC-2 or MXR Bass Octave Deluxe to bring some subs. It isn't perfect since the tracking can be glitchy, which I enjoy, and it can't go too low.

But an octave down pedal can definitely add some low end to higher strings. BOD sounds better before dirt, OC-2 works before and after.

Thanks for the input guys! I love octave pedals but they're not quite what I use if I want to bring heavys. I think they are better suited for just thicking up single notes in a non subby way

I still think you could try the Octamizer after your drives then, it's the only octaver so far that really does bring those subs in my experience.
Did you try a Kill Kill Filter yet?
It's probably not as heavy as a Meatbox or Density Hulk but it's still quite heavy, especially on bass.

The stupid prices people will pay for the Meat/Buzz boxes made me sell mine long ago. They're not as great as the pedal wall people would have you believe imo.
