School me on speakers.

Post by ApeLincoln »

So a while back I sold my bassman reissue to a friend and then shortly there after bought a JCA20 off of Skullservant. The issue is now that the speaker cabinet I do have is a old piece of shit my dad built back when he played guitar like 35 years ago and it's seen better days. The speakers are in bad shape and were never really meant to be guitar speakers as it was. The cabinets been around the block a few more than its fair share of times aswell and I'm thinking its time to move on and just keep this as a backup.

Given that I'm fairly handy with carpentry I've decided to build my own new 2x12 unfortunately I don't know much about speakers. I like the sound of the Eminence swamp thang but I'm looking for something that'll pair nicely with it. Perhaps a Man-O-War :idk: but I'd really like some guidance here.

I play in a kind of drone/shoegaze-y band so I'm not looking for something really bright and articulate but more of a thick, rich low end.

Talk to summit about his over sized emperor 2x12.
I think chiller (?) owns one as well.

Also, have a look at Weber Amsterdams. Haven't had any personal experiences but their description fits that bill: https://taweber.powweb.com/weber/

I'd think the Swamp Thang would be a contender. Cannibis Rex, too.

Eminence EM-12 seems new, an EVM clone by the look. If an accurate clone, there's gonna be some ke-rang, but balanced by a big, smooth low end. 200w is a bit overkill for a 20 watt amp, but my EVM sounded godly with a ten watt Champ-ish amp I used to have. You can find plans online for the TL-806 cabs designed around the EVM speakers--a single 12 cab is heavy for that format, but a pretty decent 412 sub.

If you can find a deal on a Celestion G12K100, those have got some low-end grunt to them, about as much as you'll find in a Celestion.

I get kind of lost trying to compare speakers. The amsterdam description looks right what I'm looking for and every review seems to line up with what I'm interested in so it's on the short list for now.

I really like my Cannabis Rex's. They are very warm, yet balanced. My Twin was overly bright before and these speakers did a pretty job of taming that. Plus the cones are made from 420hemp420.

I wrote to eminence and described what I was after and they were really helpful.

I personally love bass speakers in my cabs. I only have one amp with a guitar speaker and it took me a while to get used to. I will never stop recommending the Eminence Delta Pro 12a. They are heavy speakers (17 pounds a pop), but they're ridiculously awesome. Loud, clear, full range, and can handle a ton (ridiculous amount) of watts.

I have really enjoyed my WGS Reaper that is my only current guitar speaker. Nice clear punch.
