looking for a new speaker. Cannabis Rex? Greenback?

Post by AC128 »

Hi.

I'm looking for a new speaker.
I have a Blackstar HT-5 and a Blackheart Little Giant with the Bitmo triple bypass mod as pedal platforms for dozens of fuzz pedals.
also a nice 1x12 enclosure, which currently has a Celestion G12K-85, not a bad speaker but I'd like some variety for recording (well, profiling, really).

I'm looking for a Thickfreakness-type of tone.
A warm sound, but with definition and no obvious holes in the frequency spectrum.

Mic-wise a currently like to use a R144 together with a Funkberater MD30-2 (for the extra top end), but I also have the usual SM57, M201 stuff as well as condensers from SE, Rode, Neumann...

Does anyone have recordings of fuzz tones through a Cannabis Rex or a Greenback G12M (Heritage)?

thanks, :)
I appreciate any input!

This is maybe not super helpful but these were recorded with both a Peavey Mace and a Blackheart Handsome Devil with one Cannabis Rex and one Swamp Thang:

I think either speaker could get the toans you're looking for depending on your amp and pedal settings.

If you feel that your amp is a touch bright the CRex would probably be the better choice
and if your amp is on the darker side, the Greenback would be a better.

Eminence makes a Greenback copy that I like better than the Celestion for about $50 less:

FWIW: I use a V4 and pair a CRex loaded 212 and a 412 with the Eminences from the link above and it kills. :animal:

Those Emi Legend GB's that MEC posted are awesome. Warmer than a greenback and not as dull and scooped as the CRex. I've had both. I liked both. The Legend GB's were my absolute favorite though. Really hate that I sold my 16 ohm quad.

i'm currently playing a twin reverb through a sunn212lh with two c.rex's and they did a very good job of warming up the previously piercingly bright sound. however, i just ordered a science hellhawk so i'm curious to see if i'll need to switch one of those speakers out.

either way i LOVE c.rex's.
