Re: What fuzz gets this sound?
The Fleur de Lys did some incredible stuff, with and without Sharon Tandy. The guitarist on that track is Bryn Haworth and I believe he generally used a Strat, a wah and a cranked amp. I'm only guessing but I think he also stomped on a Mk II Tonebender every now and then, which is how he gets the sound for that solo. I've played along with that track plenty of times and a Mk II works really well for me for that part. A thinned-out Rat (either with the Rat's filter or an EQ to take out some of the mids) will get real close to the rhythm sound.
Acid Jazz released a nice Fleur de Lys comp last year, "You've Got to Earn it", which is well worth tracking down. There's also a comp called "Reflections", which is also excellent and has both versions of "Hold On" on it (they recorded it originally without Sharon Tandy in D; she heard it, loved it and then they recorded it with her in G).
Other cool FDL/Sharon Tandy tracks:

"Circles" is another classic FDL track, recorded in March of 66. The guitarist on that one is Phil Sawyer, although Jimmy Page is often mistakenly credited (he produced an early FDL single and it does sound like him). I reckon Phil Sawyer was using a Mk II as well although it could also be a Mk I.

^ Love that track.
I've been on a huge Fleur de Lys kick lately, which may explain my overenthusiastic reply:-)

Perhaps overenthusiastic, but not unwelcome.
You could be listening to a lot worse.

^ Could well be, Ed. It fits with the time period. Apparently Bryn Haworth found God in 1974 and started making "mainstream Jesus rock". He probably hangs out at TGP so maybe we can message him and ask him what he used

Yeah I got the Reflections compilation last night which is how I stumbled on itHorseyBoy wrote:The Fleur de Lys did some incredible stuff, with and without Sharon Tandy. I've been looking at getting a Tone Bender for ages now being a fan of the Page and Mick Ronson live sound but it's hard finding Tone Bender clones that aren't very expensive and there are multiple versions making things extra complicated.
Funny you mentioned Jimmy Page producing a single too because there was one Fluer track on the compilation that sounded very Zeppelin

There's definitely a few people in the Shark Tank that can make you a ToneBender to your liking that won't be brutal on your budget.

Re: What fuzz gets this sound?
I actually think it sounds like a Fuzz Face too, but I'm really bad at identifying fuzz tones. So,

^ As I said, it could be. Your guess is as good as mine (and probably better).

Re: What fuzz gets this sound?
I'm thinking Tonebender 1.5, most likely the Vox.
That clip has a good deal of FuzzFace sound but its fuzzier like a bender...and silicon trannies were still a few years away.

Re: What fuzz gets this sound?
Bryn Haworth has a contact email on his website. I'm seriously considering dropping him a line and asking him if he remembers what he used back then. Only problem is I'd feel like a complete doofus (yes, even more so than usual).

You totally should (and I, for one, wouldn't consider you a doofus).
