Broken IC lead

Post by Bellyheart »

So I broke a rather expensive chip lead. Not all of it but the skinny part. Socketing chips is meant for failure. Anyway, I soldered the remainder of the lead to the socket impulsively. Should've soldered it to the board and saved the socket for something else.

Will this still work, assuming the chip isn't fried?

It will work. One on the pins on a reverb brick I got for my Rub a Dub broke off and I soldered a spare bit of wire to it and it works perfectly and has for months now.

Socketing ICs is the worst. Nothing better than trying to get the pins straight on one side and then you push a little to hard and BAM! 4 bent leads. Then you drink another beer!

The cheaper IC sockets with the thin, flat metal pins seem to work far better than the machined ones for me. Hope you get that IC back in working order. I feel your pain.
