Rats! A Schooling

Post by Boxbie »

So a pal of mine had a ye olde big box rat which sounded amaze.
I have played all the new production rats :idk:
I own a turbo rat which I've modded to have switchable clippers (silicone or LED) and the LM308 ic. It sounds ok.

The only current model which really floats my boat is the white face reissue. But with no led indicator light, it's a deal breaker. (you can't always hear whats on before you start playing).

So, what would you recommend as the best rat-ternatives out there?

Let the games begin!

:snax:

Edit for led indicator clarification

Are your other component values to original spec? They mussed some cap values when they went to the OP07 opamp; it makes about as much difference as the chip.

I've done a few other mods, (reutz?). I can't remember what I've messed with now, but the filter control does a weird sweep. I suppose it could be fun to completely repopulate it with audiophile bits of the original spec. Has anyone got a layout for this?

The IdiotBox Blower Box is Rat-based, but has a clarity and low-end (without sacrificing any nasty dirt) I've yet to witness in any other rodent-centric pedal.

Get a white face that you know you like, add LED?

Either get a Rat Tail, or get used to non-LED pedals. I've been rocking an 83 big box for a while, and I recently went from having an 86 small box to a whiteface reissue, and they're all non-LED. And, I just bought another late 80's non-LED rat.

Why does it need to have an LED?
Usually with a pedal like that, you know when you've got it turned on.

He means using an LED as a clipping diode. Sounds pretty badass in a Rat circuit.

You think? I interpreted it the same way as PZ there. Plus, if he thinks a big box sounds amazeballs...

Hm, just went back and reread the OP. Good point.

I did mean led for indicating if it's on or off.
Adding a led to a WF reissue is not a bad idea.

I just thought before I go down that road I'd see if there's anything ratty that is actually better in the first place.

And Rat Schlongs are perfectly acceptable :p

Big boxes are where it's at (I know, I know: TWSS), but if you really need an LED, how about a Stomp Under Foot Skinner Box? Cool name, cool pedal, LM308 chip.

Sounds like a Rat should to my ears. And if you hate it you can sell it to me at only a slight loss
