i guess all the stories about them catching fire has put me off. there's also the behringer connection, who make shit gear that is unreliable. i've never owned a bugera, and never would, but i've played a 1960, and while it was loud and okay, it was nothing compared to the amp it's copying. there's also this band we end up paling with fairly regularly and their guitarist has a bugera that just sounds like total shit and i have to listen to that piece of shit assault my ears all the time. decent band, but i hate hearing that fucking amp.
i also am just put off by some bullshit company starting up and making shit clones of cool amps as their whole business model. you take a classic amp and make a clone that sounds nowhere near as good and catches fire and sell that people as though their getting something as good as the real thing? fuck that. it tarnishes the name of the amps they're copying and takes money from the people who have a legitimate right to sell it.
i know most music gear these days is often close copies or alterations of other gear, usually something older, and i really do appreciate that as the evolution of cool designs and how shit moves forward. but straight copying popular gear and mass producing it in a chinese factory is taking it to a level that i just can't get behind.
i appreciate limited budgets. hell, my whole life could be described as a limited budget and that would be the understatement of the year. it's true that i have a fancy pants vintage marshall, but it took me a lot of hard work and a long time to be able to get it. i went through years and years of cheap gear. a lot of my stuff still is cheap. i just think diligence and creativity and a good ear can build a cool rig out of cheap shit that will often be pretty unique. but just going out and buying a cheap chinese copy of something cool will often end up with an amp on fire and an inferior tone to what you were trying to copy.

Re: Bugera 1960 for doom????
What if you arent trying to copy a tone? I didnt buy the 1960 because i wanted a plexi, i bought one because its loud as hell and has loads of lowend plus it has an FX loop. Personally im unimpressed by brands, im impressed by tone and frankly.....the 1960 doesnt sound like any plexi ive ever played.
Im also stunned that people still get all butthurt over copies in musical gear. We as a group are usually quite poor so cheaper gear is, IMHO, great. And really there isnt any "tarnishing" of the amp it copies name, i mean do you think less of Ibanez every time a tubescreamer clone is bought? People that want Marshalls, buy Marshalls. People that want Marshall-esc buy Bugera.....or Laney, or a Crate Stealth, or Ceriatone or ad nauseaum.
As i said before....ill play thru a decomposing squirrel if it gets me the tone i want, who made it or what it is matters little to me.

Now that's an interesting observation. Especially on/for this forum as a whole. Especially if you expand it beyond amps and/or catching fire.

That's a meta-comment if I've seen one.

We have reached new levels of klonception. I'm of the opinion that most amps are basically reworkings of other circuits. Honestly, you almost can't take anything on an "as advertised" basis anymore. How many Marshall owners hate on Laney, or how many Matamp purists dislike Orange? I say different strokes for different folks, but I'm definitely with you on the quality control and shittiness aspects.

Re: Bugera 1960 for doom????
i probably shouldn't have typed that post, but i'm not going to edit it at this point. i doesn't really represent a totally reasonable point of view overall. i was a fair bit tipsy when writing it. as i've said before, i sometimes wish my internet connection had a breathalyzer on it. i just have a weird thing about bugera. i don't really even have a problem with clones so much, but i think something about the fact that their entire thing is making cheap, degraded quality clones and nothing else bugs me. i don't know why i'm more bothered by them than other companies that do it.
anyway, apologies for the earlier rant. it was dumb. i drink too much sometimes.

Ahh yer good man, nobody should get pissy about a differing opinion around here. I feel ya on the weird thing vibe, but on the other thing I had that about peavey for years.
My very first amp was a solid state peavey backstage 50. What a giant piece of steaming hot shit that was. I fucking hated that thing and was stoked the day I finally got something to replace it. All those years of killer Peavey amps and I would never even look at them or consider them at all. I'm well over it now and would not mind adding a few peaveys to the stable.

fuck man talk about contrast!...when i was thirteen, i had a gibson hummingbird copy that my brother stuck a single coil pickup in...when i say stuck in, that's exactly what it was...screwed it in over the hole...then knocked a whole into the body with a screw driver and fed the output jack out of the guitar. No tone...no volume...just on. For amp, i had a 20w solid state gorilla amp...with everything on ten...I use to early metallica with that set up...it must have sounded shit, but at the time i thought i had it all!
On the Bugera topic...i only found out about these 1960 amps the other day and was checking some demo's and they sound really good...if you're in a band and you need loud amps...then you cant really go wrong at that price.

Re: Bugera 1960 for doom????
I didn't get a guitar till I was 16 and that's when I had enough money saved to buy one and a shitty Crate combo 1 12. I didn't get a half stack till 5 years later and didn't start building a wall of amps till another 7 after that. I'm a late bloomer.
On Bugera.. never really cared for them. Just something in actually playing them doesn't speak to me nor makes me want to spend more time with them. Most of my budget gear is stuff that's not getting snapped up for double or triple of what I paid which is all the Ampeg SS's I own.
