Giggable bass rig <$650?
With a budget of $650 USD, what should I buy for a head/cab bass set up? My only aim is to be as loud as possible.

Are their cabs any good?
I actually have a Firebass right now. I'm still curious to know what people would get, though. I just got a SWR workingmans 4x10 from GC super cheap, but one of the speakers sounds like it has a piece of loose paper stuck over it if that makes any sense. So, I'm gonna return dat sheeit.

KVLT is the only way.
Maybe it's just because I'm down south, but it seems like over 75% of pawn shop amp inventory is Peavey.

When price and volume are the two concerns, it's used all the way and whatever the market will bear.
And probably local (although you can abuse the GC ship to store on used stuff pretty hard if you have a local one).
Also giggable depends on what your band plays like, room size (or outdoor), availability of backend, etc.
I'd go with whatever cab I could find that met the basic requirements that wasn't 10" speakers (don't like them for guitar or bass), then go head or poweramp shopping. Couple hundred for the cab, couple hundred for an amp, misc for deals or supplementals as below.
Poweramps may be cheaper than a bass head by quite a bit - then just use a preamp of your choice that works. Doesn't have to be great, again, price. I'd look for something adjustable and 80s/early 90s rackmount in the preamp category for a hundred bucks or less (which most are) and go to town.

If you want a grittier sound, definitely Peavey. I had a Mark VI as my main amp for close to a decade, it was a beast. I think paid 200 for it back in the day, and I think I sold it for the same after 9 years of hard use. Bullet proof.
If you want a cleaner amp, I'd recommend getting a Genz Benz Shuttle. I got a 3.0 (300 watt) for about 250 about 4 years ago. I gigged with it for a couple years and it's a solid amp. Jrmy has a 6.0, if you want more juice, and I think you can get those for around 300-350 used now. Then I got the all-tube sickness and sold the GB.
As for cabs, anything with Peavey Black Widows in it is going to sound awesome. I also like GK cabs, and Avatar.

Peavey or Acoustic heads are cheap, common, solid and loud. Cabs I know less about...

It's pretty easy to score a ss head around Toronto, I paid $200 for a Yorkville 300w and a matching 410, I even see used gritty ampeg 810s for as low as $400 here. Acoustic seems to be catching on these days so I've noticed the price rising on those.... but there's always cheap bass gear to be had....

Besides joining the Kvlt, which ain't a bad idea, maybe a GK head. Old 800RBs aren't too expensive. Avatars are good priced cabs.

Just in case you don't want to drink the KVLT K00LAID, I've always had a boner for kustom tuck and rolls. Fuckin sparkles man.
