Telebration Cabronita - mods

Post by npfrs »

Love this guitar!

Sounds great but I wish it had just a bit more versatility. So here's what I'm thinking...

1 - Replacing the current pot/knob with an S-1 pot/switch to switch between parallel/series when the pickup selector is in the middle position.

2 - Use the knob I replaced and add a second volume pot with treble bleed kit and give each pickup its own volume control.

3 - B-bender (just kidding!)

So it's looking like these might be the parts I could use...

Right direction? Wrong? Thoughts?

Are you planning on adding a knob AND keeping the switch?
If so, you may just want to have the two knobs control volume and the switch could control parallel/series.
That would leave you with an extra switch position for something else too.

I have the Squier version of this and haven't put it down since I got it!

The treble bleed seems like it could be cool, but personally I like the treble reduction from rolling back the volume, since the pickups are so biting and there's no tone control.

Where are you going to put the second volume pot? Are you going to drill a hole, and if so, where? I love this guitar too but I do miss having a tone control and since it was so inexpensive, I wouldn't feel bad about doing irreversible modification to it.

This makes more sense to me too. Sounds to me without thinking about it too hard like it'd be simpler to wire it this way too.

Treble bleed caps are always good, but I agree not having any tone control might be undesirable (unless you hate tone controls I guess). Maybe you could use the third switch position wiring it like MEC suggested for a darker tone setting?

So, to clarify, the knob that is there now is a master volume knob - and that's it. There's no S-1 switch in the telebration guitar.

So the plan is to replace that pot/knob with a 500k pot and S-1 knob to do series/parallel. This knob would be changed to control just the neck volume.

Then I would put a second knob next to it (meaning making a new hole) which would be a 500k pot and normal knob (likely the one I replaced previously) and it would have a treble bleed kit. This knob would control the bridge volume.

There would still be no tone knob as I'm not missing it now and I think blending the pick-ups would be enough. Having the treble bleed on the bridge only would allow me to turn it down but still keep some bite while knot having on the neck would allow me to mellow it out a bit sans tone knob.

Mine is the 60th anniversary telebration model - only 500 ever made. Some people would think I'm insane for wanting to mod it but, since I know I'm never getting rid of it, why not? It can't lose value to me - it can only gain it.

What I was getting at is if you are going to have a volume knob for each pickup, that makes the switch somewhat redundant.
If you want all bridge or all neck you just turn the other's volume down.

If you're cool with that, you could still do the S-1 if you wanted then just replace the switch with a pot/knob to control bridge volume.
There may be enough room in the switch cavity that you wouldn't have to mod the guitar to pull this off.

Ah, gotcha! I'd rather keep the switch and add a second knob. That way I have the flexibility of blending in the bridge while in the middle position and flicking it to just the neck for a different sound, or being able to turn the neck off and use the switch like a faux-killswitch, if desired.

In the end the knob placement would be like this (except no third pick-up):

I popped open the control cavity on mine and it seems like the knob and selector switch are drilled in different places than the above picture, although I don't know for sure. There wasn't any room above the knob (closer to the neck) without drilling straight into the pickguard. There seemed to be a little room below the selector, but not much; it definitely wouldn't be evenly spaced.

I'm not sure if the placement on the Telebration version is different but that's what I found on my Squier.

I looked closely at it the other day and I think you're right... I may be abandoning this plan and going for something a bit simpler.

Bummer city. Keep me posted though, I love my Cabron too. There's gotta be a way for me to squeeze a tone knob on this bitch.

Maybe you could do concentric pots/knobs?

I'm thinking a push/pull for parallel/series - gonna see if I can get a treble bleed on it.

Looking for a Hipshot Xtender for the low E and Kieth D Tuners for A and high E - three quick flicks and it's Open G.

Seems a lot more complicated than is necessary, and I kind of feel like it's in the opposite spirit of this particular guitar design.

Which part is "more complicated than is necessary?" The part where I decide I want to take a guitar and add a personal touch or the part where I add a slight bit of extra functionality to a guitar which is, as you imply, a simple design?
