Thanks for the info!

My ideal TT would be a Technics SL-1700 followed probably by almost any SL-1*00 from what I have seen
Plan to keep my eye out for certain Pioneers and wishful thinking of an Empire.

What are good vintage amps to keep an eye out for? I hav found a bunch of info on TT's but not much as far as amps.

Any other recommendations for tube preamps? I'd like to stay under $3,000 (new or used) and would prefer one with a separate power supply

I'm really interested in an Audio Research SP11, but they can be a bit expensive. I'm also looking at the Audible Illusions Modulus 3A/3B. I like the look of the Cary SLP-98, but I'd like a little bit of EQ to play around with.

I found a Technics SA EX110 at a pawn shop for a tiny more than super cheap. I know its modern, but how would it be for entry? Thinking if its good enough it would increase my TT budget.

I have had the Cary SLP-98P F1 for awhile now. Basically a Cary with all of the upgrades. You can definitely find something like this used for under 3K. I'd say the built-in phono stage is on par with an Eastern Electric MiniMax that I used to have, but with a bit less going on in the mids. When I needed to run a MC cartridge I just used a Cinemag step-up transformer with good results. Since I've got tubes in the phono stage, line stage and power amps, if I need to make any tonal changes I usually do it by swapping a tube somewhere. I haven't tried the other preamps you've listed, but I know they have a very good rep. I basically went with the Cary since I already had a set of Six Pac amps made by them. The pre does have a goodly amount of gain, so just check what your amp might be looking for. I actually think the SLP-98 has a bit too much gain for my needs.

@Psyre It's going to be an upgrade from what you have. No doubt about it.
If it works and the price is right, get your foot in the door.
But you'll likely outgrow it relatively soon.

In Arkansas you should continue exploring in thrift and pawn shops, even repair shops if they still exist where you are. Both rural and urban.
A lot of old stuff has surely found its way there as the previous generation dies off and the heirs clean house.
See if anything turns up at the local dump as we move into spring. Also yard/garage sales, flea markets and so on. Deals are out there if you're on a tight budget, and just looking to get some better gear than the modern plastic garbage that's passed off as consumer products these days...but that isn't exactly a high bar by any means...

Cool thread!
Oh yes, I love listening to vinyl records. I got around 300, I guess.
My most special one is probably the my (ex)band's EP: I had myself printed just one vinyl copy! (I guess technically it's a dubplate, whatever).
I use a Linn Axis (with some quite good grado cartridge, blue maybe, don't remember?) into a Project PhonoBox MM into some homemade SE tube amp I got off ebay - and as speakers I still have my good old technics (from the 80ies).
I would like to have a tube phonostage, but they are kinda pricey.

AFter hitting up quite literally every pawn shop/flea market within 2 hours I decided to bite the bullet and buy a TT online. I have heard horror stories about shipped TT's but it was the only way i could get one. I ended up going with a Dual 1019.

The option for 78's was a real draw. I feel like I got a decent price, not cheap, but a lot cheaper than I have seen them going for lately. Needs a carriage/carriage mount. Repro mounts seem to be about $45 which still keeps me in my budget. Probably going to pick up the XAM amp for the time being. $10 is hard to pass up. I also found some Technics speakers (SB-CR77) which I believe were pretty much entry level but a lot of people say they are far better than expected and at $20 the risk is fine.

Thinking about getting an AT-70 Cart to start and eventually after I recoup a bit pick up a Shure V15 II which most people seem to favor for these.

Awesome man! Looks like you're on the right track. Maybe make sure the bearings are lubricated properly. Also, one way to check the on the condition of the bearings is to use a stethoscope on the plinth while the table in turned on, should be silent...any other noise is maybe not a good sign on their condition. Everyone owns a stethoscope....right?

I have a greasing/lubing diagram for it, Iheard the brand super-lube is recommended if you don't want to go the 10w30 route. had I only known I needed a stethoscope, saw atleast 5 the past 2 weeks.

Finally settled in at the new place. Been here for two and a half weeks and don't have any sort of shelf/cabinet for my records, so they're lined up in the closet of the spare room. Hoping to find something in the next week or two, but I'm waiting for sales.

The good news is I finally got to listen to a record for the first time in three or four weeks!

My mom found a wicked cabinet at the end of some driveway (for garbage) and brought it home. She asked if I wanted it for my record player, so I took that. It's in great shape and is just plain black with a glass door. I've got my record player on one shelf (with enough space to open the lid), the amp on the other shelf, and my headphones on the bottom shelf. Of course, one of my autographed Jason Voorhees pictures sits on the top of it. I've got a speaker on either side of the couch.

I just need to get a nice headphone preamp, and maybe a new preamp/amp, and I'm fucking set.

I really wish you guys would have done a better job at warning me about how addicting this all is.....

I'm considering breaking pedge, alas selling some pedals for a cartridge. I was originally looking at the AT71 for my Dual, but now I am leaning towards just getting a Shure M97xe or AT-95E.

I just ordered a reproduction headshell and shim, which puts me at just under $200 for the Dual 1019, but I think the reproducion shell will be a lot better in the long run than $15 less for an original, since the headshells seem to be the achiles heel for the 1019's.

Other than that I am hoping to find a Harmon Kardon 330b receiver for under $100 and hopefully get lucky with some EPI 100's. I REALLY want a pair of Dynaco A25's which are suppose to be sweet with 1019's. Cosmetically I think they are rad. I love the grainy/colorful grill cloth hah.

shit
