what are they based on?

Post by Hyphen Nation »

So I got a TAFM a year ago, and it pushed all fuzz off the board…been feeling the urge to another flavor of dirt back in. Being a member of this forum doesn't help this problem I have, either…

I am curious as to what a few pedals I am looking at are based on?
Truth be told, I am looking at picking up an actual good sounding muff in addition to some other stuff.
Just wanted to know what I was comparing some things to so I understood what were apples and what weren't.

Am I accurate in the info below?
Hoof: rams head…love me some germanium
Pharaoh: rams head with extended control? The new one looks amazeballz.
Jupiter: more rams head?
Black Forest: color sound overdrive, right?
Musket?
The Elements: Dr Scientist madness.
ss/BS Fuck OD: Brian invention

Thanks for your time..all insight welcome. Opinions on what to add to the mix are welcome too. fwwiw, my current set up [very much in flux] is Sparkle Motion > KOT > TAFM > Moog 101 > Moog 102 > Rainbow Machine > Freeze > EAR Delay > Modfactor > lofiloop > RV3 > Univalve.

Forest is loosely an overdriver, for sure. But it has giant hairy balls and wants to make you it's bitch by making everything awesome.
I should know, I'm enslaved to mine.
Musket is a bunch o muff variations, I believe.
Soni pretty much nailed it, but my blood debt to my BF obliges me to praise it's unholiness at every opportunity.
Edit: also soul stealing is the Ape Blaster, which everyone should have.

this site is like a place to enable addicts…
I think I was just recommended to buy 4 of the 8 pedals I listed.

I'm pretty sure the Musket is based on the Russian Muff, either the Green or the Civil War, I forget which.

musket is a black russian IIRC with an lpb-1 in front (pre knob)
black forest is about as close to a colorsound overdriver as anything out there. the only thing different is one electrolytic cap.
hoof is a violet rams head variant with germanium in Q2-Q3
will help you!!

First of all I gotta say it sounds like you got a great collection of pedals going already.

If you already own a TAFM i say a muff is unnecessary, if you pick up a muff variant I think you'll quickly find it to be redundant ... but I'll admit my bias as I'm really goddamn sick of muffs

Check out some octave fuzzes man, discovery of the Superfuzz was one of the greatest things that ever happened to me

I wouldn't bother with a fuck unless you wanna ditch yer king of tone, or an elements unless you want high gain distortion, yer covered for low and medium gain

Isn't this what Effects Database is for?

the bluebeard is an excellent rams head. best muff clone ive tried. I will say I prefer it on bass. no mushy attack.

the whole superfuzz route is a great way to diversify. lauwiz makes a fantastic fm2 and beebaa.

First, thanks for all the insight guys. I appreciate the responses, and the push to find pedals that compliment what I'm already working with, not duplicate...

As far as effects database, I spent a fair amount of time on there, and a lot of it reads like press releases, not always speaking about what the circuit is based on…for example: Walrus Jupiter "inspired by thick sounds of blah blah blah…" maybe I am not bright enough to read between the lines, but I wasn't any more informed than when I went to their site.

Yeah, I love Effects Database, but it's not always accurate.

I think Bart is often forced to use builder's own descriptions fairly frequently.

There's just way too much information for one man to work with. He does a fantastic job though.
