I'll say that if a flanger doesn't have four knobs, that's a deal breaker.

So, the Deluxe Electric Mistress isn't the flanger for me. It's sort of for flanger purists. I like the Filter Matrix feature, but it doesn't generally get as wild as I like. I really need to be able to control the delay time.

The A/DA is just super versatile. It can do Deluxe Electric Mistress style sounds, but does a whole lot more as well. There's lots of control to it and it sounds fantastic at whatever is does.

The BYOC I borrowed from jrmy. It's nice and covers a lot of ground, but didn't quite excel at any one sound in my opinion. It has stereo outs, which is neat, but that doesn't really push it over the edge into the true winner's circle for me. I think it'd be fine for someone who doesn't use flange that often.

Those are my recaps in a nutshell. Hope that was helpful. I'll try to answer specific questions if you have 'em.

Yeah, I usually don't use flangers for the stereotyped flange sound, they're so much more versatile than that. I do like the swooshiness, but also like flangers for vibrato, fixed filter type sounds, steel drum tones and the occasional jet plane noises. I change the settings immediately if I encounter anything remotely sounding like chorus.

Oh, I also love flangers with really slow sweeps.
Cool, thanks!
The BYOC sounds like it could be a good one for me then, do you know whether it also does static flange / filter like the filter matrix mode on the Deluxe Electric Mistress?
I never tried the A/DA but I did try the Frostbite which is said to be based on the A/DA but that one was overly complex to set up for me and for some reason it sounded quite dark too, I'm curious how the A/DA would compare.

I'm pretty sure I'll get the AD/A Flanger.
I really like you.
But you are an idiot.
You Trust demos.
Get a Möbius. Damn. You are the IT guy that will make it sound awesome.
You put it quite strongly (tongue in cheek I guess), but I do understand your reaction.
The Mobius kinda sucks in my opinion, the flangers on it however are incredibly good, to be honest I'm not typically a flanger guy but the flangers on the Mobius are so good that the rest is kinda overshadowed by it I think (okay, okay, the vibe and some of the tremolo's are quite decent / nice too).
I think the strongest parts of the Mobius are definitely the flangers, the rotary sim, the univibe and the quadrature and destroyer wackiness. I could take or leave the chorus, phaser and trems. But just the fact that I was able to sell my flangers, rotary sim and bit crusher more than made up the money I spent on the Mobius. And being able to make my own presets, name them for the song I use each one on, and organize them into banks, is such a time-saver.

Don't sleep on the rotary sim in the Mobius, it is serious dead-on-balls-accurate. One night at covers band practice, the guys wanted to jam on Orion, so I bent down and built a leslie patch in about 30 seconds. It sounded fucking perfectly like the intro to Orion.

This is a great demo...

But it seems so steryl and artificial compare to the AD/A Flanger.

You're welcome.

I don't think it does the filter matrix, although maybe it could be modded to. You should e-mail BYOC and see what they have to say.

Yeah, complicated flangers aren't always easy to dial in, but if you spend the time with 'em, they're totally worth it.

I've never tried a Frostbite. So, I couldn't tell you, but you can probably find a comparison somewhere.

FYI: the Flanger Hoax can also do the filter matrix. Bypass both phasers and then delay mode DC freezes the sweep and makes both delay lines static, then you just turn the delay amount knobs to set the filter matrix frequency where you want it.

I forgot about the rotary sim, I never use that stuff really, I can imagine the one on the Mobius would be pretty good.
About the quadrature and destroyer I beg to differ, it's no match for my Bitcrusher III or FrantaBit unfortunately, just as the pattern trem is no match for my Goatkeeper 3.
I can understand why people use the Mobius though but it's not for everyone.

The Flanger Hoax, that thing seems so awesome, it's like a flanger, phaser and filter in one, just so complex, I wouldn't know where to start with that thing and it's EHX so it might already be broken before I figured it out. ;)

It's actually two phasers and two flangers in one. :thumb: You can bypass the phasers, but not the flangers, they're always on. I had a hard time understanding how it worked too, until I read the Mode Zero review of it. They totally lay out what all the knobs do and explain it really well. A hundred times better than the EHX manual, which was a joke.

Here is the page I'm talking about:

http://www.modezero.com/flanger-hoax.htm

And I actually agree with you that the destroyer isn't as good of a Bitcrusher as a couple of the dedicated units, but it's good enough for amount I use bit crushing, which isn't terribly much, but then it also has the warped vinyl simulator and the telephone/am radio filters crammed into the destroyer mode, too. And we'll just agree to disagree about the Quadrature mode, I love the AM and FM modes.

Also, another kick-ass flanger tune from back in the day is "Keep Yourself Alive". Brian May was a pimp, and he fucking loved pedals, too.

If you aren't too picky the MXR Micro Flanger is small and sounds great. I used a MXR 4 knob for years and took a chance on this. It doesn't mess with your tone too much and doesn't have that harsh digital sheen that Boss flangers have. Some report a volume jump, but I never noticed it.

edit: just noticed there was 5 pages, sorry if I missed something. This forum looks weird on my phone.
