Re: The Doom Room: ILF Edition
Also, can someone give me a quick overview of how EL34s VS KT77s VS 6CA7 for bringing the mid-heavy doom tones?

Re: The Doom Room: ILF Edition
I have an old quad of Sylvania 6CA7's and a quad of xf4 Mullard EL34's, but I've never played any KT77 (which I can assume have the most amount of headroom of the bunch). Out of the first two, though, I find EL34's have more mids and more punch while still being creamy when saturated. 6CA7's get a bit more scooped in comparison, but with slightly bigger low end and also a bit more headroom. They can be a bit sterile when pushed hard compared to how creamy the EL34's get. If you're pushing your amp hard and want tube saturation I prefer the EL34's, if you want headroom and big cleans to use pedals then you might like the 6CA7's.emptyparadigm wrote:Also, can someone give me a quick overview of how EL34s VS KT77s VS 6CA7 for bringing the mid-heavy doom tones?
But, as a lot of people say, "they don't make them how they used to" ...so I'm not sure how that compared to anything made today. Last I read up on them they were using the same insides for EL34's and 6CA7's with just different branding and actual tube size. As usual, it also depends what amp is in use and if you're playing bass or guitar. I think the difference between them is subtle and only real important if you're extremely picky about what you're hearing. I say focusing more on longevity is more important.

Re: The Doom Room: ILF Edition
I have a lead on a '78 Ric Bass in black (jetglo) for $1000 cash. I've been gassing for one and think I can probably flip it if for whatever reason I end up not liking how if plays/sounds. As well as selling a few other things to make up for the damage if I do keep it. Should I do it? If I go look at it tomorrow, are there any things to look out for? Comes with a case too. I just don't want to miss looking into something "Ric" specific that might be of importance and/or not fall for a fake or anything.

i'm sure someone could chime in on what to look for - only thing i know specific to Rics is the dual truss rods - so be sure to pull the cover and look for that. As well as the serial # system they have on the jack plate (i'm sure google can help you there) - you might want brush up on what the B-side of the pickups look like and pop over a pickup to check it too.
dibs on the flip!

Re: The Doom Room: ILF Edition
Thanks! I'll be sure to take my little set of screwdrivers to check the truss rods and hopefully take the pick guard off. I have had two Ric guitars, currently have a 480. So I know the pots and caps they used at the time. Just never really considered a bass or looked into them until recently watching Church Of Misery in November, haha!

Re: The Doom Room: ILF Edition
Thanks guys! They came out better than I expected. Palomino did them and I highly recommend checking them out if you are looking to get something pressed. Travis was awesome to deal with and never took more than 30 minutes to reply to any emails I sent. I heard about them from Josh at Husk records and checked them out. Their website is a little unimpressive but they have great prices on their colored vinyl. I'll definitely be using those guys again on my next vinyl project.
EDIT: forgot their website address

Get another cab for your bass rig instead.chillerthanmost wrote:I have a lead on a '78 Ric Bass in black (jetglo) for $1000 cash. Re: The Doom Room: ILF Edition
Yeah, except there are no matching 810's and I haven't seen any pop up in a while, unfortunately. I think I'm just gonna keep trying to sell mine and pick up a single cab (or two smaller ones) that will handle the SVT. Ideally, two 4x12's would excellent. Either way, if another flatback pops up before I can sell mine, I have some cash out aside for it as it isCorey Y wrote:Get another cab for your bass rig instead.chillerthanmost wrote:I have a lead on a '78 Ric Bass in black (jetglo) for $1000 cash. Holy crap conk, those look great!
Do you have any up for order yet? I'm glad you guys went with apex parasite, it's definitely one of my faves that you guys do.
Ax, that sg is looking Schlick dude.
Chiller, just get the Ric. You know you wanna.
I just found out I'm working the day of Soundwave.
Not great for fans of mastodon.
Hopefully I can get a swap organized with one of my work buddies no hassle.
And the reality of how difficult this next year is going to be is starting to hit home. I'm halfway between being psyched up and wanting to just kill it and having major anxiety.
Fucking life, man.
