On Board Dirt

Post by O Drones »

How many dirt pedals are people USING on their boards? How many could you get by with if you had to? Is there ever too much, especially live, where it might be less important to have different types of dirt?

Right now I'm using an OD (Mini), a fuzz (Demo Tape) and a distortion (Elements), because I'm trying to use less stuff at any one time, but I always find myself wondering if it'd be worth putting more dirt in the board or not :idk:

Yeah, I realise this has probably been discussed a bajillion times, whatever :hobbes:

The most I have ever used live is 4- but my signal was biamped. OD and Fuzz/Distortion for each channel. I usually only use 1 drive and 1 dirt though

The more the merrier, I say. I love the different textures different fuzz pedals can bring and if you've got the space, why not pack 'em on your board? That said, I've just pulled a few fuzz pedals off my board to make way for the Stone Deaf PDF-1, which is an amazingly good tool for shaping the fuzz in front of it - so instead of adding fuzz you get a LOT more out of the fuzz you've already got. Right now I can pretty much cover all my dirt needs with a Rat, a Ram's Head Muff, and a Regulus VIII (Os Mutantes fuzz). I also love and use an FZ-1, but with the PDF-1 I can cop the FZ-1 tones with the Mutantes fuzz live.

Two, my modified superfuzz clone, and my doomidrive. I'd like to have more fuzzes, but I like to keep it simple, and being a bassist I find only one is necessary I hate to say.

Still have a pink elephant coming in atm, but the way i have my superfuzz set dials out most of the octave, I think ill be able to justify having the elephant on the board.

Between 2-4 for jams and home stuff.... for live shows I'd pair it down to two at the most.....

Forgot to mention the importance (and fun) of stacking. I'll routinely run Rat into Muff or Muff into Mutantes for a different sound…
And myrrh, five sounds good to me :thumb:

The Mini, DTF, and Elements covers a lot of sonic territory so maybe that's all you need...

Sometimes I'll hook up RRR > 10-20 fuzzes > El Cap and it's always a awesome...

2 currently, usually 3. Big Spider, TAFM, Elements. The Big Spider's usually going into one of the other two or it doesn't sound big enough.
I only "need" these three 'cause the Big Spider provides my NO MIDS HEBBY TOANS while the TAFM handles the rest and the Elements is either always on or is set to brootl high gain mode. I use a Blowing Up to add more variety to all three.

On a board I would think 3-10...

Just checked and I could do 43 dirts in a row... It's all flavours and colours and such really...

I'm using five dirts on the board right now. I do actually use them all, but I could definitely get by with three, maybe even two. I just don't like having to switch settings during a show/rehearsal. Invariably I'll forget to change them back & end up fucking up another part.

Using Shoegazer, Super Puzzle, Sound Shank, White Light, & FuckOD. I guess that could be six if you count the TP & SM in the 'gazer. FuzzStang is prolly gonna go back on in its place anyway.
