I'm sure everyone will have a different opinion on this one, but I'd say that it never hurts to start at Disintegration.

Definitely Disintegration. Everyone is correct on that count! Other essentials would be Seventeen Seconds and Bloodflowers. Those three are all very good and very different from one another. Second tier necessities are Faith, The Head on the Door and Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me. Faith is great as far as production goes (it's a dark album... made darker by the fact that it was recorded in a chapel), HOTD is good poppy stuff, and KM^3 is just a clusterfuck.

Then again, for variety's sake, these are all kinda necessary :thumb:

Three Imaginary Boys... though the Hendrix cover might be kind of.... :erm:

Boys Don't Cry also has great songs on it. (BDC, Plastic Passion, Jumping Someone Else's Train--all very good songs, IMO)

I would say that the Staring At The Sea and 2-Disc Best Of compilations cover their best singles quite well... I'd suggest SATS for tracks like Killing An Arab, Lovecats and Jumping Someone Else's Train.

It doesn't have Just Like Heaven, though.

PS: The "reissue" of Staring At The Sea is missing a whole lot of B-sides apparently. If you can find an old copy on tape (I think the original CD version included these missing tracks too, maybe), try to get that one!

Get them all, each one is different and unique and brings a different sound to the band. But I highly recommend the "dark trilogy" - Seventeen Seconds, Faith and Pornography, a downward spiral of a trio that begins morose and ends up hallucinatory and disturbing.

Disintegration and Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me also rank highly.

'Head On The Door', and 'Disintegration' are absolutely essential. Pound for pound, their best two for beginners.

'Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me' is sort of their "Physical Graffiti". Not the best beginner's album, but essential in the big picture.

Like someone else said, if you want the darkness...also get 'Faith' and 'Pornography'.

It's hard to say because they are one of my favorite bands....and I have all of their albums up through 'Wish' (which is sort of 'Disintegration' part 2).
After that, they started losing members again, and quality went downhill on subsequent albums.

As far as video goes, "The Cure In Orange" (which was released in theaters back in the day) is THE SHIT!!!!!

I would hold off buying Disintegration until next year - that's when the 3 disc, remastered, deluxe special edition will be released. Well worth waiting for.

Awesome! "Entreat" is great....but I never liked the mix....so glad Rob remixed it!

I bought Disintegration the day it was released, and took acid that night to hear it for the first time....... :animal:
...and then went and saw them live on that tour (on acid again) with Pixies and Love & Rockets opening.
....yes I was in my acid dropping phase. Disintegration and Pornography are two of the best listens on LSD.
Just saying. :idk:

For the cold waveish stuff

17 seconds
Pornography

For the poppy stuff
The Head on the Door
Kiss me Kiss me Kiss me

Finally for a wonderful union of the two
Disintegration

Such a great band, probably the first truly great artist I ever started listening to. I was introduced to them by my brother during a time in which I was listening to utter shit like Korn. I owe Robert Smith for saving me from truly terrible music. Please keep in mind I was like 14 at the time. Also Robert Smith is a adorable in concert. The one time I've seen him perform he seemed so shy despite the fact that hes been doing this sort of things for decades.

Well Mr Smith was on acid when he wrote most of Disintegration, so you experienced it in the optimum state, I guess! lol I know they were off their faces for the writing/recording of Pornography - classic story about them building houses out of cardboard boxes in the studio live room and living there for the whole of the sessions. Madness.
