There are a couple records that I love, but won't really listen to unless I'm in a certain mood or mindset. Is this an absurd thing?
The two that spring to mind are Brand New's The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me and Manchester Orchestra's I'm Like A Virgin Losing A Child.
What are those records for you?

I always listen to "I Can Feel Your Pain" and "Sleeper 1972" at the worst moments.
Those songs have brought me to tears too many times.

Re: Mood Albums
I feel this way about seasons. In the summer I will listen to mostly upbeat, short songs; for instance tons of English Beat. In the colder months my tastes are much more mellow and slower tempo and longer songs. It is not a hard and fast rule, but that is the general gist of my music listening. I guess this is normal, but whatever.

... like all of them?
Most recent example is Madlib's Shades of Blue. I listen to that album at night, driving, without any visible light aside from stars.

+1 on the portishead.
boards of canada & tycho are a couple others i have to be in the mood for. they're both background music to me, but in a good way if that's what i feel like.

Re: Mood Albums
Much as I love them, Talking Heads have always been a 'right place, right time' sort of band for me.
