yeah says that switch was mainly cosmetic to size down. i think if i pick one up i'm gonna try to find that '84-88 version...
also that R2DU is pretty sick, duecetone too!

Yeah, I traded for my big box, and paid $150 for the '86 on a whim. Otherwise, aside from these two, the Fuzzrocious Rat Tail is the second or third best variant I have used (I've owned two of those, and they both sounded kinda different, the older big box one being slightly better). Then, it goes Rat 2, some generic 4KR clone, and then a Chinese R.Attack.

There's really not much pixie dust or unicorn piss to the old ones. Get the right components with the right values and it'll sound right. The LM-308 chip is out of production and getting gouged now, but a LM-301 will usually do in a pinch. The much maligned OP07 chip isn't so bad, either--a cap value change removed a lot of the low-mid frequencies on these, and a two cent cap will generally help at least as much as several bucks on a chip.

Chinese made Rats have pretty junk components--Culturejam has decided the path of least resistance on these is to drop in a new board with new parts. For the less hardcore, just get the cheapest USA Rat you can and tweak the parts to taste.
