Let's see your EXPERIMENTAL TABLETOP GEAR

Post by Dexterecus »

Not sure how to name or explain the thread..

I recently read about Nadja's Aidan Baker's setup. Looks like he only uses a cheap 4 channel Behringer mixer, a bunch of mainstream fx pedals and his guitar for all of his recording and touring (no amps). And, although it's a genre I'm not really familiar with, I think lots of noise and some drone musicians use effect pedals chained together on a table to improvise and create soundscapes.

Inspired by this I'm trying to put together a similar setup, I ordered one of those small 4-channel mixers and I'm going to plug in some effects and a synth.

So basically, I was wondering if some of you guys do similar setups or know of bands/musicians who use this kind of gear. I'm pretty new to this.
Gear porn is always welcome!

You just need a passive bass, a tube amp, and a metric ton of marijuana and Sabbath worship.

I used to play pretty actively doing noise/power electronics gigs back a few years ago.

Used a contact mic running into a Russian Big Muff, Noise Swash, DOD Death Metal, DOD DFX9 Delay, Malekko 616, and Meatbox.
Those shows were fun as hell....

If you're into music made with weird tabletop gear, definitely check out Holy Fuck. They use all kinds of synths, toys, pedals, mixers and random shit to make all almost all of their sounds.

All my stuff is essentially tabletop or equivalent, cripples don't use their feet much (on a good day I can use the better of the two legs).

It's one of the reasons I like old rack gear - lots of knobs and options to automate.

But the experimental of my generation was not guys tweaking 808s and pushing 0db.

Played this gig at the fall of 2011. I don't remember what exactly was used by our synth player but my guitar setup was:
ProCo RAT -> Boss RV-3 (mostly used in sound on sound mode) -> Vintage EHX Electric Mistress -> Strymon El Capistan

Somewhere there's a video of my Inflatable Sex Babies table in action, from the ILF Northeast Meetup.

Really like the abstract drones Franck Smith does with his Sleepdrones.

For reference Aidan Baker's pedals are on the bottom. He's also currently using a Boss OC-3 Super Octave as both an octaver and a distortion these days (I'm not if he still uses the zoom multi or not, previously it was used for pitch shifting effects).

I think the top is Eric Quach and co from Destroy All Dreamers
