I suspect that price is per mono block, as well :whoa:

Nice product of engineering there but no where close to 5 figures worth IMO.

Oh I'm sure they have, not saying they don't deserve to sell it that high but personally I would never feel good about owning an amp (or really anything besides a house) that expensive. I'm trying to own/buy less stuff these days but it's a struggle.

Joined the cult yesterday :)

got an old stereo amp with two 2x10 cabs and a record player plus a huge amount of old vinyls from my granny. Most are utter shit, but there are some good ones (Queen, The Who)... and the bad ones can be sold to fund new ones :)

And today, I officially bought my first record

got my eyes on Dopesmoker, Seer by Swans etc... too bad there are some records i really want but there's no way i'm going to pay that much for (like Earth's Bees Made Honey...) but you know... that's the deal I guess :)

I just recently took a large leap into vinyl, primarily Beach Boys and have found some pretty cool albums over the past 2 months. I have a couple questions however.

How do you tell if your stylus/head needs replacing? What cleaners do you guys recommend (budget in mind) how often should they be deep cleaned? Any recommended brushes?

Hard to say but take a jewels loop or some sort of magnifying glass and take a look at the diamond. if its covered in black or has black specks around it you might want to get a retip. I use a product from Lyra call SPT Stylus Treatment, about $50. Lyra also makes my cart, about $2,000. Before i play each side, i'll use the stylus cleaner. Its just a brush and I gently wipe is over the tip. There are probably less expensive options, one i've seen is like a gelatin blob and you just dip the tip into it before each side.

I use a VPI record cleaning machine, about $600 but there are less expensive options...by hand for example. I clean the records when they enter my house, new one's to remove the mold release compound, and just because, used one's for obvious reasons. then they get new rice inner sleeves and i use resealable outer sleeves for the entire sleeve. Before playing each side of the record I'll ground the record by holding it against my nose while touching the turntable...this deals with static noises, then i'll turn the player on and take a carbon fiber brush and remove anything that has settled. I'll clean the stylus tip, and get my groove on. Never any noises, never any pops, never anything but music. I only clean a record once a year at most unless it's getting played alot and i get sloppy with handling it. my little ritual takes a bit of time but it's worth it in the end.

As far as cleaners use distilled/deionized water and isopropanol alcohohol with whatever mixture you go with. isopropanol. there are lots of recepies on the web. You'll need the right surfactant..and some distilled/deionized water and the isopropanol. A 4" nylon bristle paint brush cut down a bit is popular for scrubbing with.

Materials for my DIY methods are available at your local supermarket.

Stylus tip care:
Mr Clean Magic Eraser, the original ones. DO NOT MOISTEN.
The idea is you clip off a 1/2" strip at a time and get use out of it for weeks/months/years depending on users.
When the TT is off, Place the strip next to or on the platter and gently lower the stylus into it, so the tip makes contact like it were a record groove. Straight up, straight down. I do this twice per record. DO NOT TRY TO "BRUSH" THE TIP WITH THE STRIP.

Record care tip:
Reusable lint brush. Not the finebrush type, the latex/rubber type that you clean with water. Like this
With platter spinning, start at the center and work outward, making contact with only the latex/rubber whatever cylinder and letting it spin freely, which will increase in speed as you move outward.

Make sure the lintbrush is clean and dry and watch out for static charges, an antistatic bracelet can work wonders.
Moistening the Magic Eraser changes its cellular structure and condenses it. So treat it like meth; Not even once.
