Suggestions on getting that piercing squealy fuzz sound?

Post by ancientbones »

I'm trying to find a cheap fuzz for just hitting the on switch and it going nuts. I've seen bands like Whirr do this, but I never got a good look at what they were using. As far as I remember it was just a plain black box of some sort.

I'm thinking maybe a self oscillating fuzz would pull this off best, something like a fuzz factory, but if you have any sub $100 recommendations I'm all ears.

Thanks!

Yo dude, I have a fuzz factory clone that I can sell you in about a week, once I get home from holidays
It's pretty ugly aesthetically but works great

There are a couple AB synths in BST that may work well for this...

Nick from Whirr uses a OCD for his dirt but he also has a NYC big muff on his board. I'm pretty sure the muff is what he hits when he wants to get wild. He probably just dimes out everything on it.

What soni said. Some of the best squeals just come from volume!

Course when that isn't possible feedback loops, fuzzhugger and devi ever pedals are a good way to do it.

Ok so I've been looking into the fuzzhugger pedals, but I'm really curious about the AB-Synth and Algal Bloom. What exactly is the difference between the two (besides osc mode on the AB-Synth)? Is the AB-Synth good with lots of shoegazey open chords? It seems like the Algal Bloom handles big open chords well but I'm worried the AB-Synth would get too splatty.
