Mystery fuzz in a Uni Superfuzz enclosure

Post by Justinm1789 »

" Long before anyone cared about old fuzz boxes (1988 to be exact) a friend and local Boston super genius-type built me this disgusting fuzz. He built it inside an old Super Fuzz enclosure.

Don't know how original circuit is or what it's a copy of. Fuzz gets super loud and has a massive amount of gain on hand. "

Interesting. I wonder what the circuit could be based on. Bidding on it seems like a bit of a crapshoot, but who knows?

Heh, sounds about right for the time, a mother of invention fuzz - use the old box, whatever transformer you can find, and rock.

I approve of the thing, even though I have no idea what it sounds like.

Most intriguing. That's the kind of random buy one can't resist.

Hmm. Good chance it's some Craig Anderton octave fuzz project. Transformer says Octavia-style octave, but opamps means not a rote copy of one of those. I never got Electronics Projects for Musicians so I couldn't say whether there's a project like that in there.

That transformer is providing the voltage by the looks of it... the OpAmps could be CMOS though like anderton... whatever it is, it's no fuzz face!

Edit: I went to the auction, a 570 compander and 324 quad opamp... either could provide fuzz but I guess the 570 is being either abused for fuzz or is being used for compression pre fuzz... it reminds me of something but can't put my finger on it... a 570 as noise reduction in a fuzz?

Definitely unique...ish.

You're right, I totally missed the lamp cord going out the side of the pedal. Looks like RS's 12v power transformer, too. I have Octavia on the mind, so I wasn't even looking for it.

I knew I remembered a fuzz using a compander, the ETI sustain fuzz, if someone had a knowledge of basic electronics they could possibly come up with a circuit like this from it.

The transformer is stepping down the 120 volts. You can see in the picture that the pedal is powered by house mains. That alone, having been built by who knows, would be a scary proposition. Unless the circuit was build in a factory, of proper repute, I would think twice about using it, let alone stepping on it.

From the transformer, we see large caps, arranged in pairs, which leads me to believe that this is a bipolar DC supply. Voltage is probably 9vdc or less, considering that the filter caps are rated for 10vdc.

As for the IC's, there's lots of 324 based overdrive/distortion/ fuzz circuits out there. Without a trace side shot, hard to say what it might be, I'm not that gifted. The NE570 has numerous applications, especially in association with an op amp. Maybe a compressor?

I've sent a message through EBay, asking if they would be so kind as to flip the board, and take a picture. We'll see if we get lucky.

I figured you'd be on top of that-- the inside of pedals is like the Voynich manuscript to me.
