Cab/speaker quality???

Post by gunslinger_burrito »

I mayyyyy get a used cab to use an extension cab for my Hotrod 410. I'm looking at a 412 or 215, or something similar. Buuuut.... I don't really know a ton about speakers, at all. I know to look for things that work, are in reasonably good condition, etc.... but I guess I'm wondering how important you guys think speaker quality is if I don't have a bunch of money to spend on the coolest shit or the time to get said cool shit installed, etc....

Also, the Deville is 6owatts, and loud as fuck, so I'm figuring that adding another cab won't really tax it that bad, right?

Speaker quality is of the utmost importance. A cab is just a wooden box after all, speakers are what make the difference.

Eh, yes, speakers are very important, but all you can do is to play through the best quality you can afford. No shame in that.

I think the box does matter a bit. Not as much as the speakers but generally speaking larger is better and you want to try for ply as opposed to fiberboard. I recently took the speakers I had in a Marshall MG cab. (not the original speakers, these are nice) and put them into a Monolith 4x12 and the difference in sound was huge.

I found a Peavey MS412 cab with Celestion speakers for 150 dollars on Craigslist. Twice. The speakers (G12k-85 I think they're called?) are slightly scooped (so, they're bassy which is what you seem to want). Not all the MS412 came with those speakers, FYI. I forget what the other speaker option was (not Celestion). Anyhow, maybe look for a Peavey 4x12 cab. The more modern ones are probably named at the Nu Metal players (so, they will also have a good bass response). Just remove the horrible jetsons style Peavey logo if you want (designed by Hartley Peavey himself - it pays to hire a real graphic designer sometimes).

Peavey.

I'm chasing down a peavey 4x12 on craigslist myself right now. Probably a good way to go.

Good and bad are relative. Get what you need and to hell with super expensive speakers. I play bass out of guitar speakers and I get complimented on my tone all the time, but they are technically wrong. 2x15's kick ass though, and are usually pretty easy to get a hold of. Then if you need to replace speakers, you only got 2 to replace.

Cool, thanks. What about the fact that I'll probably be trying to use it as an extension cab for a 60 watt amp for a while? I'm kind of a retard when it comes to these things because amps are one of the things I haven't owned many of. Will 60w be enough, will it be safe on the amp, etc??

If you're splitting it, then the extension cab will only see 30 watts. As long as you give it the right impedance there should not be any problem at all with the amp.

The most important thing is getting the total OHMS from the speaker cabinet to match what your amp wants to see.
If the OHMS from the cab are too low you can damage the amp and if they are too high you won't be getting as loud as you could if they were matched.

http://www.legendarytones.com/ohms.html

The other thing you need to think about is whether or not speaker breakup is important for what you are doing.
If it is, it's not likely that you be getting much of that once you hook up the extra cab.

Nah, I want cleans. I'll use pedals for mah dirt.

Sooooooo..... http://www.fender.com/series/hot-rod/ho ... 20v-black/

Those are the specs for the amp, and the matching 112 cab that Fender makes to fit under the Deville is also rated at 8 ohms. I guess I'm confused about whether or not I should be hooking up something rated for 8ohms or 4ohms? I'm assuming it's 8

You want an 8 ohm cabinet.

you'll want to match whatever cab you have. and run the amp at half that if they're both hooked up. so for two 8 ohm cabs, run your amp at 4 ohms.

The Hot Rod Deville is a combo and doesn't have an OHM selector.
The extension speaker out is set to receive an 8ohm load.
Fender Website wrote:It produces amazing clean and overdriven tones and luscious Fender spring reverb, and an 8-ohm extension speaker output even lets you add a cabinet for additional stage coverage.
