Try making it a closed back cab with some properly placed cardboard and then add about 10 db at 100hz. Plenty of bass then.

I'm kiiind of leaning towards just getting like a 4x12 or 2x15 cab and using it as an extension for now, because it might be cheaper.... or notrfurtkamp wrote:The amp section will get plenty bassy - the 4x10 is your problem.
Those are bright, ugly speakers in that thing.
I like my Hot Rod Deluxe with the 12", it has no icepick issues unless I set it to be so.
But the 4x10 just does nasty nasty things.
I've hooked the Deluxe up to my 2x15 and 4x12 before and it gets loud, stupid, and mean.
It's already a closed-back. It's really deceiving, because of the difference of PLENTY OF BASS at room volumes, but ALMOST NO BASS at show volumes.ShaunNecro wrote:Try making it a closed back cab with some properly placed cardboard and then add about 10 db at 100hz. Plenty of bass then.
I know we've covered that already, but I always find myself turning the bass knobs up and up and up on a lot of my gear when I play live.
Honestly, though, I think I just want something that's basically a bass amp that can handle some highs and good mids. All my guitars are in drop Bb, and my baritone is tuned in fifths from a bass D.....sooooooo

Scratch my closed-back comment from the record. Apparently I don't know what I'm talking about

Most eqs put bass around 40-65hz which can eat your headroom up, but 100hz can still add a lot of bass without doing that, and most speakers should be fully capable of handling that frequency, plus it is usually on most eq pedals. Try it and if it works then you won't have to buy a new amp or cab!

The virtual amp(s) I use when I'm playing late or something have an EQ "pedal" that makes them sound MASSIVE. I've wondered about a simple EQ pedal as a "cheaper" fix
. . . At least until I find the amp and cab(s) I'd like.

I love my MXR 10 band. I mostly use it to get rid of the "ice pick" freqs and a little low end boost. It's a handy tool.

Eq pedals are handy to have, i use a Fish and Chips to thin out my tone for my baritone when i solo clean, but it wont help you if the speakers or amp themselves cant handle the bass at the volume you want

That's my one concern with the EQ pedal idea.

Id be suprised if the HRD can really do what you are asking of it honestly. You could try an extention cab first, that way if you still dont like the tone you already have a cab to add a new head to.
Im a huge fan of my g-flex 2x12, massive lowend there and ive recently tried a behringer 4x10 cab in my doom setup. I rewired it to 16ohms and disconected the tweeter but its got loads of lowend, its not the lightest or the loudest cab ever but it is remarkably cheap used.

Re: Should I get a new amp or just an extension cab?
"Cabin effect" will influence the impact of your bass. The smaller the room, the more rad your bass levels will seem. In the jam room it sounds cool, but in a club it suddenly loses a lot of oomph. You probably want bigger speakers, and maybe more speakers. More speakers are louder and (all things being equal) usually bassier. It takes more watts to create bass frequencies, too (if your wattage is questionable). Speakers reproduce your note when the magnet moves back & forth ("excursion"). The bigger the magnet, the more potential bass. To create bass notes, the speaker has to move further back & forth than treble frequencies (think about big bass waveforms versus mosquito-like treble freq…. I dunno if there is a literal connection, but it helps me visualize the goal). That's why you can sometimes destroy your guitar speakers by playing a bass guitar through a guitar cab - the speakers can't handle the excursion (and one reason why bass speakers sometimes fail too). If you want doom tones that travel beyond the practice space, you need big speakers (or speakers that can handle bass well), a lot of those speakers, and a lot of watts. Alternatively, you can mic your amp and run it through the PA if your setup sounds good at lower volumes, and you have a good PA to run into. Typically, nothing you can reasonably bring into a venue will trump the PA for volume and full frequencies (with exceptions for crummy PA's etc).
I guess that was a word salad, but hope that made a little sense.
TL;DR - I hear the Mesa/Boogie straight cabs make everything sound awesome. They are expensive (400-600 used?) and big and heavy, but your toanz are worth it maybe.
