and they firmly cemented themselves in my mind as one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Not many people have a presence like Eugene, or Niko for that matter.
By god if you have a chance to see them, don't hesitate....

I don't hear much about Oxbow, but the people who've recommended them say they are fucking great... No one who's mentioned them to me seems to dislike them... I have only heard a handful of recordings, so I've not been able to get a good perspective, but I'd like to hear more.

Oxbow is one of those strong flavors, particularly Eugene's vocal style. But obviously that's a good thing if you don't like mediocre music. As far as intensity goes, he's in the school of the Nick Cave, younger Michael Gira (Swans), Diamanda Galas, David Yow, Genesis P Orridge, etc.. Not in style, which is distinctly his own, just in one of those people that is so fucking intense in their delivery that if you're the opening band you better reevaluate. Very strong sense of narrative and persona. He actually does stuff with Barry Adamson (Birthday Party/Bad Seeds) occasionally as well. Dangerous combo of intelligence and willful disregard for propriety.
Oxbow is 100% a crushing rock monster, a completely dedicated band to their sound. And Niko's guitar tone and playing have always been great.
And don't believe the hype about Eugene fighting all the time. Its not like GG Allin. Yes, he will take most of his clothes off, but he only fights with the dudes that want to step up and press their mettle. Which boggles my mind as you better know what you're doing if you think you're take down a semi-pro body builder/ fighter. As he puts, he'd rather finish the set and play than fight, but he's happy to embarrass you in front of all your friends if you want.
Good place to start is Serenade in Red which has 2 "popular" tracks, 3 o clock and Last Good Time. It was recorded by Albini. I prefer an Evil Heat, whose opening track is one of the most intense songs I have ever heard, and I listen to quite a bit of "extreme" music. His personas are a preacher and a brothel keeper, check it out and see if you can follow the dialog. Narcotic Story is newer and is recorded very well as well, also a great record.
