What kind of fuzz/dirt?

Post by sylnau »

Do you think this is some kind of low gain super fuzz?
There's octave up there?

got to see them play that tour and chatted em up afterwards. but didn't get into gear. matt was playing a gold top les paul if i remember correctly, but that's all i remember. need to listen to the track on my stereo. on my computer it just sounds like he's double tracking his line in places. probably just straight into whatever amp cranked.

Wow, pretty weird but great sound indeed, I love it! :)
The only thing I can guess is that it must be some kind of double tracked guitar but it's played very dynamically and mixed underneath the main guitar by quite a bit so in the later part of the riff that second guitar really comes out bringing that doubled ringing sound out more.
The sound also seems to be quite dark / deep in the bass but it also has some kind of directness in the highs.
I just played a Fender Excelsior amp that did just this very thing actually so that might be something though I think you could also get there with putting a guitar in a mixing desk through a good preamp and work with extreme eq and compression for the secondary guitar track.
I also hear a phaser in there somewhere on the secondary guitar track, it becomes especially apparent around the 1.28 mark and after but I think it's on there before as well though very lightly.
Funny, at first (when I first listened from the beginning) it sounded like a guitar doubled with an old piano underneath it to me. :D
Nice, interesting stuff, thanks for the link! :)

To me it sounds like a doubled guitar part.
This song is wonderful; thank you for posting about it.

For that album, Matt was in a depression and Will was all "hey man lets make an album". separately, matt wrote the music, while will wrote the lyrics. Pretty cool idea. came out gangbusters.

Matt played on a lot of Will's earlier albums too, mostly the bonnie prince billy era. He has a video show...dont know what they are called...named "guitar moves" where he interviews a guitarist and they both play etc. its really interesting.

Yes probably some light pahser in there. Maybe a phaser with a blend.

Anybody know a good organic phaser with a blend knob?

I'm tinking Empress Phaser, but it might be overkill for what I need.

Just found that I can get similar with my Octron.
Octave up mode 1 (ringmodish) and lower the gain a bit.

Sweet. I know you were after the sound, but Matt has been in Zwan most recently, all over early Will Oldham albums, and his first band was Chavez if you wanna check out more of his music. He's also a pretty regular studio session player.

Just watched that video you posted, that hollowbody guitar, makes sense, one of the double tracking guitars in that track must be that guitar or something similar. :)
