Should I get a new amp or just an extension cab?

Post by gunslinger_burrito »

I posted about this a few months back....but I played a show tonight and my bass tones are simply too puny for the tunings I'm using

I've been playing through a Fender Hotrod Deville 410 for a couple years, and it sounds plenty bassy at room volumes....but at show volumes.....nowhere close to the amount of low end I'd like. To give you an idea, most of my guitars are in drop Bb, and my baritone is tuned so that the lowest string is a bass D. Should I even bother getting an extension cab for the Deville, even if it's a 212 or 115? Or should I try and swap it out somehow for a head and a 215 cab or something of the like? :idk:

Ive never thought of the HRD as really all that bassy, honestly i think it might be time for a different amp.

Maybe run the Hot Rod in combo with a bass amp?

I vote new amp and new cabs. Maybe an early 70's Ampeg V-series or a late 60's Bassman head for starters and something beefier than 10" speakers after that.

Or how about the bassisest amp of all, the RedBear? I have a mk60 and would love a mk120

it was worlds different
ive since added a bass rig as well
but the sound is gonna fill out
dont know anything about hotrods
but the commander was close to icepicky
higher the volume the worse it got
havent played it without the 212 since

Seriously, a RedBear would slay for drop tune heavies. I played one through a Mesa Recto 2x12, pretty good sound but V30s ain't my thang. Then I started using it with a JBL K140 (or something like that), it's a 15" speaker, and it was gat damn beautiful sounding. No muffled shit, just straight up sternum shattering lows. However it, probably wouldn't be that interesting of an amp to you if you don't use amp distortion.

Back on topic, though, I think you should get a new amp and go the head/cab route.

The amp section will get plenty bassy - the 4x10 is your problem.

Those are bright, ugly speakers in that thing.

I like my Hot Rod Deluxe with the 12", it has no icepick issues unless I set it to be so.

But the 4x10 just does nasty nasty things.

I've hooked the Deluxe up to my 2x15 and 4x12 before and it gets loud, stupid, and mean.
