I didn't realize there was a new Juicifer record.
I also didn't realize there was a new Stryper record.

I think it's the best fucking doom record I've heard since Reverend Bizarre broke up.... like Electric Wizard, but with a chick singing and awesome guitar solos......D.o.S. wrote:I read that a little too fast and was all "Williams Sonoma? Well now I'm gonna hunt it down. I know Windhand gets a lot of love 'round here, but I'm so curmudgeonly in my exploration of new doom bands that I almost never check out ones I haven't heard of.

I am too. I am reeeeeeeal picky about doom - mostly because it's so easy to fuck up. But I was blown the fuck away when I heard this.

Windhand are worth your hassle, DoS.
Soma is purdy.
I know you mention savage masters by Zozobra, but I just wanted to give big hugs.
That record fucking kills it. And it was dropped on my birthday
!
There's been other shit, but those two have made my year.

NOTHING.
Not talking about the band either.
There wasn't one stand out album, imo.

second to Weed - Deserve for me would be Haunted Horses - Watcher. Really nice noise rock/industrial punk. They're on band camp.
I'm hyped for Nothing's 2014 album tho. Their EP Downwards Years To Come is shoegaze af.rot gut wrote:NOTHING.

Re: Be(a)st of 2013
Okay it's officially 2014 so I can post the big wordy write up I do on facebutt and dumblr every year:
1. Subsume by Cloudkicker- So Cloudkicker is my favorite album of the year, again. What can I say, he makes really breathtaking music. Go listen to the track “You Could Laugh Forever and Never Find Happiness” to see what I mean. It’s an album that melds the heaviness of his earlier work with the restrained tempo and shoegaze sensibility of 2012’s Fade into a four track album that feels like one long, unbroken journey.
2. Memorial by Russian Circles- Russian Circles keep going down this path where more and more black metal influence keeps invading their music. This time around you have tracks that are among the most dissonant, crushing and cold sounding of their career, juxtaposed against some of the softest songs they’ve ever put forward. The contrast is really jarring in the best kind of way.
3. The Afterman: Descension by Coheed &Cambria- Gravity’s Union is the best song of 2013. Beyond that, there’s a lot of other really good songs here to closeout The Afterman duology. It’s only held back by one song I could live without (Away We Go) and one song I don’t like (The Hard Sell). Of course, you know by now whether or not Coheed & Cambria is a band you’re gonna listen to so why does what I say make a difference?
4. Hesitation Marks by Nine Inch Nails- We all knew Trent Reznor was gonna come back to NIN sooner or later. What we didn’t expect was an album of infectious dance tunes with Lindsey Buckingham playing half of the barely-recognizable-as-guitars. The songs are more solid than they’ve been in a while, and the album as a whole is actually cohesive, unlike his 2005-2008 offerings. Only listen to the ‘audiophile’ version though.
5. Sunbather by Deafheaven- So when Deafheaven came out with “Roads to Judah” I was mildly impressed with it as “Wolves in the Throne Room-esque” and worth a listen. Sunbather has seen them establish themselves as their own unique entity that exists outside of all the labels that get attached to them. It’s aggressive major-key metal except when it’s all acoustic and dreary. And it’s always awesome.
6. m b v by My Bloody Valentine- Took you long enough, assholes.
7. Virgins by Tim Hecker- This album is hard to describe. It’s ethereal-sounding electro-ambient that has some elements of drone to it. I find moments of it astoundingly soothing, and other moments completely unsettling.
8. Cupid’s Head by The Field- It’s a testament to this guy’s songwriting and production abilities that he’s managed to keep this project interesting. It’s low-tempo, chill sound house music that’s based on simple loops that repeat over and over while other stuff builds up around it and finally comes crashing down. This is probably the moodiest sounding record from The Field and certainly one of the best.
9. Old Mornings Dawn by Summoning- Summoning is a black metal band that happens to be my guilty pleasure. Nothing about this band makes sense and in theory they should suck. Murky production that blends everything into a midrangey haze, the most ludicrously cheap sounding drums and synths in all of metal, oh and it’s all about Lord of the Rings. Despite all of that? It’s fucking awesome. When the band really gets into it, you hit a point where all of a sudden you get it. You make out the subtle intricate melodies in the guitars and how they play off the synth parts. You trick yourself into hearing war drums instead of cheap midi patches. You start cheering along when they talk about drinking elf blood. Shut up, I’m tired and Summoning is awesome.
10. Watcher by Haunted Horses- Weird aggressive noise rock with some trippy vocals and violent instrumentation. One of the more interesting new discoveries of the year for me. I only wish there was more of it.
