I'm not the biggest SY fan, but his stuff is my least favorite it seems.

You can open up a dozen of any Muff, EM, DMM etc and upon comparing the circuit board you'll see *substitutions* were made here and there with regards to which diodes and caps were used where and how many (substituting 2 of a kind for 1 of another).
The builders used whichever parts they grabbed that were (close to) within spec...and being that all electronics are not equal, this leads to deviation and supposed *mojo* in certain units, in certain rigs where others sound good but not magical like the special ones. It's like a quest for the grail.

The modern big boxes and XO series abandon this bricoleur experimentation for standardized, cost-efficient production. They're pretty much all the same inside. Hear one example of their new pedals, you've heard them all. That's really sad...
I do agree EHX have got boring, but I'll never understand the appeal of a pedal that might not sound like another of the same model. That's fuckin lame, shelling out money for something you should like but daaaang some dude grabbed the wrong component that day so it sounds like ass. Nope.

Mojo can suck it, if I play a buddy's pedal and think it's rad, when I buy one myself I want it to sound the same, that's kind of the whole point of having a set 'model'.

This whole thing is dumb. Don't have any sympathy for the klon guy not getting his money at this point; good or not, the pedal business is how it is, and people figure out circuits they want fast so to keep ahead you gotta give people what they want.

But mentioning the pedal you're cloning directly in ad copy? Not classy. And seriously that's an ugly pedal.
As Scruffie elaborated, the variety wasn't a matter of "wrong components" being used, just different ways to go about achieving the desired values. Some sound better than others, but 2 similar models will perform the same function.
Speaking of "model", if you're really that anal about consistency and things sounding the same then you should probably go the modeling route, because there will always be deviation in the analog world...
At the most basic level, having a set "model" serves as the packaging for a tool that performs a specific function/solution.
There's more than one way to skin a cat, and using certain models to perform unintended functions is part of the fun.

Mojo is the shit. Haters gonna hate, players gonna play...and I don't want to sound the same as everyone else.
What I said didn't really hinge on WHY they sound different, if the end result is that they DO, then meh. Obviously I don't expect every pedal in a run to sound completely identical, but I don't want them to be so wildly different that some might be awesome but some actually suck.

Now I'm not really ripping on EHX, I realise no vintage pedals are all that consistent because of improvements in component manufacturing and probably value drifts over time with some things, just saying I cba shelling out 'vintage' money for something that might not be great. Sorry if I came off aggressive, wasn't meant that way.

I was just clarifying the reasoning for differences and trying to clear up the EHX just winging it rumour.

I don't think any one vintage effect is going to sound crap unless a part has gone faulty with age, it should always sound like what it's meant to but I guess some are more preferable over another, but it's certainly not as bad as the old fuzz face fiasco where parts were wildly all over the place and a room being hot or cold could make it sound like ass.

I think that's a case of if you like vintage equipment or modern rather than a particular brand.

Oh that reminds me of the point I totally meant to add (I'm feeling pretty ill today so bear with me), that most of my "knowledge" on this topic is stuff I've heard, possibly by massive tone divas who can never be satisfied, and every bit of vintage gear I've had has sounded pretty good. Soo it's entirely possible my whole deal there was bullshit. Well, not the bit where I dislike the idea of big variations, because I'd stand by my opinion on that front, but the bit where I assumed it actually happens regularly with stuff that isn't totes broken.

Scruffie wrote: Hopefully after this batch of rather uninspiring cheap ODs/Dists they'll go back to more interesting stuff, we did have a nice run of digital stuff like the HogII sequencer, Super ego etc, this is probably just a break from high priced, high investment designs to bring in some quick cash flow (we may not be the target audience but I imagine 14 year old me would be all like holy shit, cheap klon! All those guitarists online say this thing is amazing) which probably explains the re-issue hot tubes, RNG and nano muff too.
This. If selling boring overdrives helps them have money to spend on making all the other cool stuff they have (pogs, hazarai, ring thing, super ego...) them build every fucking hyped crap all the blues guys pay hundreds of dollars for. I don't really care for clone builders or mojo builders, they had nothing to the world.
The art part does really suck, but it always have, except for the big stuff, and that might be a nostalgic/to used to it thing. But we got used to all the cool art from dwarfcrat, blackout, eartquacker etc.
