I don't know if I really understand it, but that picture makes me never ever want to play guitar again....

I'm always thinking about adding a transparent overdrive :whateva: to my chain, but it's not going to be this one...

Amd I the only one who thinks Lee Ranaldo is kind of a douche? His "song" on every SY record always kind of eats it.....

are they wizards at ehx or something? 62$ ? is it going to be a limited run or something where they only release a couple to paid famous musicians to shill...then sit back and watch the price skyrocket as they slowly sell them off for $1000s of dollars on ebay etc as the "lucky to get one, need the cash" guy.

A) I think it's awesome that they're offering a cheap Klon, because that means the circuit will be more available to more people. If I was some 14 year old John Mayer-o-phile playing P&W on weekends and pouring over TGP in my spare time I'd be beyond stoked that I could snag a Klon for about the price for a bag of good weed.

That I don't smoke, because I'm a 14 year old John Mayer-o-phile playing P&W on weekends. Regardless, one day I'll get into chicks and orgies and The Metal, only to relapse into Mormonism and find me a hot blonde wife who will put up with my newly revived love of transparent overdrive.

B) I think it would be silly to not at least consider the idea that Klon-man is getting some kind of kickback from EHX, which is why they're referencing his product directly in their ad copy?
B is an incredibly valid point. The worst thing Bill could do (at least to TGP) would be to sell his circuit. But with all of those nightmares around it... Why wouldn't he?

The modern big boxes and XO series abandon this bricoleur experimentation for standardized, cost-efficient production. They're pretty much all the same inside. Hear one example of their new pedals, you've heard them all. That's really sad...
I do agree EHX have got boring, but I'll never understand the appeal of a pedal that might not sound like another of the same model. That's fuckin lame, shelling out money for something you should like but daaaang some dude grabbed the wrong component that day so it sounds like ass. Nope.

Mojo can suck it, if I play a buddy's pedal and think it's rad, when I buy one myself I want it to sound the same, that's kind of the whole point of having a set 'model'.

This whole thing is dumb. Don't have any sympathy for the klon guy not getting his money at this point; good or not, the pedal business is how it is, and people figure out circuits they want fast so to keep ahead you gotta give people what they want.

But mentioning the pedal you're cloning directly in ad copy? Not classy. And seriously that's an ugly pedal.

I'm not the biggest SY fan, but his stuff is my least favorite it seems.

EHX really isn't as bad as people say component choice wise from what i've seen (which is a lot) they did all use the right values not just 'that'll do' it's just component tolerances were a lot worse back then unless you paid a lot more for parts (this was when the difference was a lot larger than it is today) and EHX has always been about value for musicians... the Small Stone being their big seller back in the day as it offered 4 stage phasing cheaply at a time phasers weren't so cheap to make. If I built 10 big muffs out of cheap Tayda parts today with ceramic caps and carbon comp resistors i'd expect each to still sound different by +/-20% (the tolerance of the caps). If it counted you can be sure they used the right value, on many schematics important values are annotated with specific tolerance values which from any pedal i've seen, they stuck to. I think pretty much any vintage effect suffered from this, only the Japanese companies really had tighter controls for obvious reasons which is when 2 units sounding the same started to come about.

One of the big reasons for different tones is also the amount of redesigns they used to do but in the same boxes with the same names.

Oh and if you want some vintage EHX now, look to the east... http://www.effectsdatabase.com/model/xvive/pro/w1 seem familiar? Designed by Howard Davis of EHX fame and the description sure sounds like a Polyphase to me.

Also, while I do agree putting klon in the advertisement is a bit blatant, they do have a team of great designers so there's nothing to say this is a direct clone rather than an homage... and hey, the amount of people ripping on the big muff or analog man with the small clone or blackout with the whetstone etc. fairs fair :p

But yeah, seriously fugly pedal, EHX are better at the minimalist look they started with, I think I get what they're trying to do... just don't EHX, stop it right now.

Hopefully after this batch of rather uninspiring cheap ODs/Dists they'll go back to more interesting stuff, we did have a nice run of digital stuff like the HogII sequencer, Super ego etc, this is probably just a break from high priced, high investment designs to bring in some quick cash flow (we may not be the target audience but I imagine 14 year old me would be all like holy shit, cheap klon! All those guitarists online say this thing is amazing) which probably explains the re-issue hot tubes, RNG and nano muff too.

And to those that say why don't they reissue stuff like the Attack Decay etc. firstly, a lot of times the parts are no longer available and the originals had designs that would no longer be considered suitable for general musicians or for stream lined production so they'd need a redesign, they can be done better digitally (the attack decay while fun really isn't all that practical having built one, I am still waiting for them to do a digital take though) they were never that popular in the first place and they're niche effects and they want money, they're not a boutique company. Now if a boutique builder approached me about making some of those big vintage designs happen...

Wish Fulfillment is the best song on Dirty. For the most part though I prefer Thurston on vocals.

As Scruffie elaborated, the variety wasn't a matter of "wrong components" being used, just different ways to go about achieving the desired values. Some sound better than others, but 2 similar models will perform the same function.
Speaking of "model", if you're really that anal about consistency and things sounding the same then you should probably go the modeling route, because there will always be deviation in the analog world...
At the most basic level, having a set "model" serves as the packaging for a tool that performs a specific function/solution.
There's more than one way to skin a cat, and using certain models to perform unintended functions is part of the fun.

Mojo is the shit. Haters gonna hate, players gonna play...and I don't want to sound the same as everyone else.
