Sounds really nice. That smooth OD tone seems to be convincing me.

I preordered mine back in October, still haven't gotten it yet. Tried emailing Moog half a month ago and haven't had a response yet.

Fuck.

Do they have a contact number to call? I'd say do that and scream at them
If they have a good service, you might have something extra along with it

Don’t call it a honeymoon review - maybe a blind date...

Post by doommeow »

… yeah, ok, the MF Drive is pretty neat. My first impression was that I’d definitely be able to use it for my wah/feedback shaping needs but that I wasn’t going to be able to dial in a drive sound that I love - so probably ok for stacking, not gonna be used much on it’s own. Either too bright or too dark, all gain or kinda flat, dare say generic….

Some random knob turning, playing with feedback going from whale sounds to dog whistles, play another chord and I find it - sound #1, Khanate-in-a-box. It’s all there. Sharp, decapitating you with a noose of suspension bridge cables, treble sound, yes haunting mids, big clear piano catapult lows. This I can work with. This CAN bring the heavy - not high gain pointy guitar tapping blues hammer shit, but will work for the Swans/Earth/drone/etc crowd.

More twiddling. Range of the filter knob - haven’t plugged in a expression pedal yet - seems to correspond to the tone setting. Got the tone turned counterclockwise, then most of the filter action is in the first 33-50% of the dial; turn the tone clockwise, range of the filter knob action expands. Turn the tone full on and you loose some of the action on the first 10 or so % of the filter knob, but there’s this magic spot in middle of the knob turn where it totally shits it self. Big ugly squealing pigfucking hot poker love.

Sweep up the broken glass, apologize to the cats, and dig back into trying to find another hot drive sound. Almost had it for a second, a thick middy sound, with just the right vocal push to get the hips shaking. Think Afghan Whigs, Gentlemen.

Kept twiddling and lost it. Can’t wait to dig in and see what else I can find. The journey, not the destination.

Final, PS, one more thing thoughts. Enclosure is gorgeous. Wished they’d swapped the locations of the power and out jacks. If it was in a larger enclosure I’d want someone to mod it with a momentary switch for disabling the Peak setting.

tl;dr - knob turning feedback drenched filtered fun, check. Probably not going to be anyone’s favorite or only dirt source. Despite the sounds in the demo vids, I can imagine this being more popular here @ ILF than on TGP. Worth checking out.

Test setup - sg > MF > 50W Traynor > matching 4x10 + Fender Bassman 2x15. All at just above conversation volume.

And here's my reviews on the drive and trem:

MF Drive: first impression, sucks big time! that crackly and farty kind of overdrive sound that I hated! at all settings & mode!! After couple of minutes I was ready to slap it back to the box and return it, but I gave second chance. I put the ssbs mini before it set to very low/breakup sound, and set the mf drive for high gain.. result: AMAZING! By itself, that freq/filter knob felt gimmicky, when stacked it's super versatile.. you can almost get any tonal color you need. Just got back from band practice last night, it cuts through the whole frequency like a boss! I cranked it to almost full, it gets a bit fuzzy.. made me jizz. After a looooooooong search, I finally found IT.

MF Trem: The shaping controls are a bit unconventional and took me a little while to get used to it. Big plus point.. no volume drop whatsoever. It has plenty of unique kind of shapes and even more with the tone knob, which is weird at first. Could even do a pseudo reverse trem (ramped envelope) which is cool. Also has that throbbing pulse even though it's not as punchy as the amp's bias trem.. it's more than enough.

I don't have expression pedal yet if you're wondering, so I can't do report on that area.

Okay it's 4 am, I should stop being an idiot and go to bed now

Is it worth using the moog drive on a solid state amp? I seem to hear differing opinions about drives and ss amps. I have a 20% off coupon at MF that I was thinking about getting the drive and tremolo.

Pretty sure as long as you keep the amp at clean setting it would be just fine, I also have a vox pathfinder which is super awesome and has been serving me on and off for like 5 years now as a clean palette/pedal platform.

Nice demo boss. I've had the MF Drive for several weeks now and am loving it. Only downfall is I find a new great sound every time I sit down with it.
Yeah agreed, tweaking can prove deadly due to the stupid amount of useful sounds in it.

That's a real nice demo up the top of this page and a killer write up too :thumb:

Glad to be of service. Trying to restrain myself from ordering the delay.
