Print that section out and take it with you to the airport.

In theory, but not always in practice...

and it also doesn't say anything about the airline giving you a huge hassle about it either.

It's that (B) that gets you. Might be worth paying for priority boarding to make sure that there's still plenty of room.

Yep.

Sometimes that doesn't even help.

I'm beginning to wonder about D.O.S's post....seemed legit, but even he's getting hassled and he's not even a party to the trip.

D.o.S. is legit.

I just sometimes disagree with him.

Secretly we just tolerate the D.O.S. cause he's scary and might bash us with a Snowboard and leave us on the back of some gnarly mountain...

:surprise:

Also now I want to invoke this clause explicitly to bring a melodica onto the aircraft in such a way that I'd be able to play it mid-flight. I think the vibe of a whole airplane full of people who want to kill you would be pretty exciting.

I shipped a Jazzmaster in a case via Fedex once and I have to admit it was a lot cheaper than I expected. Just used a box from a previous guitar (check a music store?).
Didn't even loosen the strings IIRC and it got to me a couple days later.

Sometimes shipping things in multiple boxes (especially those flat rate boxes) can be more expensive.

FedEx is the way to go.
I've shipped 5 or 6 guitars/basses and multiple amps and never had a problem.

A Jazzcaster in a HSC from FL to VA was $35 for 3 business days and that included insurance and tracking.

They also have an option to ship it to the FedEx Office store nearest your destination and you just pick it up whenever you get in.
