to mod or not to mod?

Post by whiskey_face »

I believe I have found my perfect amp. it does everything I want to a T and hit it with a dark overdrive and its the tone all my heros had growing up :!!!: and it can be fuzzy or tight just depending on the playing style. . . .

Ive already thought about modding it with better transformers, a total recap job and making it run 6550s to increase bass response and so my marshalls can have matching power tubes. (makes sourcing easier)

then I thought if im gonna do the transformers why stop at only a 100 watt jcm 800? why not slap huge iron in there and have it hammer out 200 watts with 8 6550s? basically make it the baddest jcm 800 on the planet with the

DGAF mod. then ill be so upsidedown with it ill be stuck with it forever!!! :yay: :grumpy:

what say you gentlemen? marshall made a million 800s and who knows if mines already modded and im keeping the superbass 100% og sooooooo why not?

yes? no?

potato?

If you're happy with the way it sounds now, leave it as is.

+ 1

if it really sounds perfect now, who's to say that an 'improvement' might not throw that off.

This, but it still might not end up sounding the same.

At first I was thinking, FUCK YEAH! But now I'm thinking that you might be better off building from scratch. With the amount of changes you'd have to do, why not. I'm sure nick would be willing to share some of his sources for chassis, faceplate, etc. With the added tubes you'd probably want a fan in there and might need to move stuff around a bit to deal with heat or other issues.

I think it would be awesome if the end result was 200w with Red Bear-esc lowend, but if you like it....pick up another 800 and mod the living crap out of it.....or maybe even your Red Bear?

I had an 800 with 6550's and I just didn't bond with it. I traded it for the same amp in EL34's and loved it. A F150 with a Ferrari engine is neither a Ferrari or a F150 any more and most likely worse than it was originally. The extra bass did not sit well with that amp, at least for me and I love low-end. It was round, flubby, lacked that Marshall punch 'n crunch. If you want bassier depth then find an amp made for it like a Meat Smoke.

I say leave it alone. If you have my luck, if you fuck with it at all you will end up losing what you love about the amp and chasing that tone for fucking ever. Have something gnarly built for you to your dream specs, that way you get to have your doom and eat it too.
