best drums for less than $200??

Post by stripes »

I need a SMALL drum kit - just kick, floor tom, snare, and one cymbal. I can't throw down any more than $200... and even that much is a little steep. I'm not opposed to child size kits... I've seen really cheap like $80 ones on musicians friend that I'm tempted to try... halp please

You are not going to get anything quality, related to drums, for under $200 for the whole kit.

Most high-quality cymbals start around $200.

Most decent-quality kits start at least around $400+ (usually including hardware).

Even a decent used kit will still be above this $200 pricepoint - though you could probably find a damaged one around this pricepoint and try to salvage it.

I mean, if you want to get something sub-$200 related to drums that is "good", you could get a decent snare drum and that's about it.

If it's possible, I'd wait until you can get some quality product because with a budget like this, whatever you end up buying will probably fall apart on you whenever you need it.

for $200 buy a set of decent pots and pans, and some drum sticks. kill two stones with one bird.

Yeah, no way your getting any decent kit for $200 or less. Maybe look into a drum machine at that price point. Used.

I picked up a used old Yamaha Rydeen kit for $300 bucks, and after some new skins they can sound pretty nice.
But that's before cymbals and new skins.

Sadly you won't find anything in the $200 range that I can think of.

Craigslist some low end Ludwig/tama/pearl stuff, sometimes you can get good deals like someone trying to sell one beat up rack tom for $10. Look for Zildjian ZBTs for cheap cymbals, they aren't that bad and people let them go for $15-30 dollars sometimes, DO NOT count on the cymbals that come with those cheapo no name kits they are hilariously bad.

Zildjian ZBT cymbals are quite possibly some of the worst cymbals I've ever heard.

Haha yeah they aren't great but find some of the ones that come with first act or groove percussion or whatever offbrand kit and they'll make the zbts sound like some next level $10,000 neil peart signature shit.

If you can spare a little more but don't want to break the bank you may want to check out Dream cymbals. I have a 24" ride by them that is amazing!

I got my son a First Act Kit at Toys 'R' Us for like $100. They're tiny and the bass drum lights up with this Space Invaders graphic, pretty bitchin'. They also sound like shit but he wails on 'em.

i haven't checked out kits in a long time but back when ddrum got into acoustics i picked up one of their $400 new kits, it was actually surprisingly great, but only once i put good heads on it... kinda doubt you're gonna get a decent kit together for $200...

both?

also cheap cymbals are gonna bend/break soon as you hit them w/ more than a gentle tap.

Doesn't seem like too bad of a deal, if you get that or can get any other cracked cymbals for cheap or free try stacking them on top of each other for a cool noise crash.
